Hit 1k miles..how long for first oil change?

It's kind of ridiculous. It's all straightforward if you take your time, but Toyota could have made it a lot easier.

 

Old thread, but....I dunno why, I just can't let a new engine run to 5k or 10k miles with the original oil. I am an old dog. Changing my oil at 1k.

 

I changed my oil on my 4 runner at about 1500 miles. Opened up the filter pleats and was pleasantly surprised. Very minimal sparkles and black sludge.

On my 2018 Highlander I changed the oil at just under 1000 miles. The filter on that one had much more bright metal sparkles and brown sludge like stuff. It wasnt alarming for a new engine, but glad I cleared that out early.

Both engines show almost no bright flecks after the first oil change

 

Never understood the reason to change your oil earlier than indicated in the manual.

To make the engine last longer with less repairs. For me the service manual is only a rough guideline on proper maintenance. That is just me though. I come from a heavy background of hard usage of heavy equipment, racing, stop and go, off highway, etc.

FWIW it does no harm whatsoever to change your oil earlier than indicated in the manual. However, if you follow the manuals service specs and are running harsh conditions, it will sadly end with more repair expenses in the long run.

We also have to look at how long you plan on keeping the vehicle. I run mine into the ground for hundreds of thousands of miles. Mom's Pulsar and Camry almost 400,000 miles, 94 Chevy truck sold at 300,000+ miles, Sisters current Ford Edge pushing 200,000 miles, 98 and 2000 Lexuses both over 125,000 miles and over 20 years old. Ninja 650R sold at 30,000+ super hard to the rev limiter miles.

All these vehicles have a common them of religious oil and other fluid changes well before the manuals recommendation.

 

Regular service intervals.

 

Bottom line, change the fluids at whatever interval you're comfortable with.

Every 100 or 10,000.

It's your call.

Always followed the factory service intervals.

 

I would not call it opinions. An opinion is something that is not based on fact or knowledge.

Maintenance and repairs are experiences and actual service intervals some of us choose to do. These are based on years of actual knowledge and fact.

Of course there are many who choose to stretch out the intervals and they will have the knowledge and fact of possibly being broken down and having higher repair bills because of it.

Another tidbit of knowledge and fact is a 10k oil service interval engine in a 4Runner is going to wear quicker than one that has the oil changed at 3K mile intervals. This is providing that both motors are being used in the exact same undifferentiated manner and conditions.

Other facts:

Running in an extreme environment such as rock crawling in high heat, high load, high rpm conditions. 10K oil change intervals are going to be detrimental to the performance and longevity of the motor.

Running 70mph on the freeway cross country in ideal conditions, 10K oil changes are going to be getting closer to 3K oil changes in a Blackstone Analysis report.

Toyotas are very reliable and most owners will sell their 4Runner long before the negative effects of poor maintenance leave them stranded or needing major repair work.

The only time I’ve had the engine go out on a Toyota was due to a catastrophic pulley failure which grenaded the water pump.

It’s usually everything around the engine that breaks or just becomes so worn out you don’t want to use it anymore.

 

How many miles on the pulley? I change all belts, tensioners and pulleys at around 75,000 mile intervals. About the only 2 major components on a motor I've seen fail on a Toyota (in general) are the alternator and starter. Water pumps have a weep hole that gives ample warning before failure.

That is kind of spooky to think a pulley would let go without some kind of warning. And agreed the Toyota engines are some of the most reliable out there. In fact I don't think you can get much better.

It was a smog pump delete tensioner pulley with about 120,000 miles on it.

No, I read the first 4 words and realized you had left your sense of humor at home that day. The rest of it could only have been meaningless dribble, so I skipped it.

 

I did my first one at 2500 and plan to go 5k-7.5k between them going forward.

 

When it comes to maintaining my vehicles I have no sense of humor. Being left stranded and spending money on preventable repairs is nothing I will laugh about.

 

Meh. I enjoy a nice walk home every once in a while.

 

I changed mine at 1K. The next change will be at 5k and so on, as per the The Car Care Nut (Toyota Master Mechanic).

I used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 with TRD Oil Filter PTR4300079.

 

I am at 5,300 miles and I assumed my first oil change was at 5,000 miles. Went to the dealership to schedule and was informed that the first recommended oil change is at 10,000 miles. They said the first free 5,000 service is to rotate the tires and top off the fluids. I guess I better bone up on the owner's manual! Surprised the first oil change is 10,000 miles.

 

Extra virgin olive oil actually my exhaust smells like an Italian restaurant

 

The only way to know for sure is to take samples. Send into Blackstone Labs and see what they say about your oil and its change intervals.

I have done this for my diesel vehicles with 10,000 mile increments and was pleasantly surprised I could have taken the oil further. Almost similar to what the drain interval is on the same exact engines in Europe.

As for the 4Runner, I do 7500 miles. Never sent a sample in but the truck sees lots of trips off road with heavy loads.

 

I've been babying mine since new. Just flipped 1k today. Going to work on doing the oil change tomorrow and start driving it like normal.
