Anyone have any recommendations for a Samsung s20 phone holder for a 2021 off-road premium? I am hesitant to go down the Amazon rabbit hole too far and would really trust the opinions of everyone here. thank you!

Not to highjack the thread, but, GAIA maps just came out with an Android and/or Apple software upgrade for the 5th gen 4Runners that puts the maps directly on the Nav system. It seems to work pretty well.

This is the best option IMO…. Perfect spot and Ram Mount is the best grip… I tried it myself, but without having to screw in to the dash piece. I used 3M tape and it doesn’t hold. I’m hesitant to drill, but if I decide to do it, this is the route I’m going.

Oh man, I've been looking at the hardware needed to make that exact thing! Thanks for sharing so I focus on more important projects! It's funny to think how much time I waste creating the things I think I need.

The only thing you might have to do with this is put it in a vice and beat a little bend in the bottom of it to conform to under the seat. You'll see what I mean once you put it on. From there you'll probably have to cut a half moon into the cover that covers the bolt to get it to snap on again. I have been meaning to get around to doing that, but I keep getting distracted with much harder projects like speakers, auto folding mirrors, amplifier...

So my first 4Runner I did the RAM diamond on the side of the head unit with the X-Grip. When I got my new 4Runner I did the same, but then....I changed the X-Grip to the Proclip for the iPhone and modified it with a RAM plate so I could use it instead.

Basically a Frankenstein where I use a RAM diamond to a 1" extension to a RAM plate mounted to the ProClip holder. Love it.

I've offroaded with it and it's sturdy, but it's a 1 - hander now, don't have to compress the x-grip when you install phone.

I bought an adjustable suction cup mount from Amazon. I attached it to the windshield right next to the A pillar, and set it up so that the phone is inline with the A pillar as viewed from my seat. So, it's mostly out of sight while driving. It's also easy to glance at it while driving to check the map. It's not glamorous, but it works fantastic!

I had this same setup with my old ride and it was perfect. I can't do that now since I have the windshield tinted and my tint-guy forbade me ;) from putting anything "suctiony" or "sticky" on the windshield.

Yep, that works too. I just don't need to see my iphone screen because I have car play in the 2021. The problem is there's no place to really put the phone when it's plugged in. I'll probably go with that RAM mount attached to the seat bolt and my existing pro clip phone holder.

I use multiple GPS apps while off-road exploring, so that's my reason. Also, the built in navigation sucks, so I use Google Maps on the phone. I just drape the charging cord over the steering column.

If you don't need to see it, there was a good looking mount that attached to the dash that I saw awhile back. I'll see if I can find it.

Yeah, I don't use the built-in nav, but google maps and gaia gps both work with car play, and so far that's working.

I considered getting an aftermarket deck that will work with my GPS apps. Even so, I might use that as a way to view 2 mapping apps simultaneously so I would still be looking at the phone. I should just mount a big-ass tablet on the dash! :D

Thanks for the RAM mount input - this is a close contender for my solution. Like most companies, their lead times seem to be extended.

For you iPhone users out there, here is an $8 pacifier that I chose to hold me over until I get a permanent solution. A 90 degree USB cable, 10' and they come three to a pack. Worked fine with Apple CarPlay. Same concept would work for other phone brands.

Since the iPhone cable comes out of the bottom, it never quite sat properly in the forward cup holder (with the cup holder insert removed). Now with the 90 degree connectors, it sits nicely and patiently waiting for a permanent solution. You can always toss them to your passengers once you get a permanent solution.

Here is the one I purchased:

Question to those of you who live in no-cell-phone-while-driving areas: with the phone mounted in plain view (which is especially visible at night), do some of these options present a danger of being ticketed? Or are there exceptions for when the phone is in a mount? I've often wondered.

I've never had a problem, but my phone generally displays either a map, or spotify, and I generally use steering wheel controls rather than touching the phone screen.

I just figure that police are simply looking for the glow of a phone screen rather than looking at the details.

In my experience, they are on the lookout for use of a cell phone that interferes with safe operation of the vehicle. Phones that are mounted did not attract attention. Those who have the phone in one hand, the other hand messing with the screen (while in motion) will get attention. That means they are perhaps a "knee steerer"

I can't speak for what other agencies do.

I'd think / hope "swerving all over the road" is what they would pull you over for. Instead of just the phone mounted up there.

In my normal daily driving, I only have the phone mounted up on the dash when using the map (Google Maps) or off pavement and using the camera & map (Gaia).

It depends on the states laws.

In CA, you're not allowed to hold a cell phone and operate it while driving.

However, you can operate in (like a touch screen radio) if it's mounted to a holder somewhere.
