    Hello everyone,

I have been doing some research on the accessory meter display from the 2014 and earlier 5th Gens, pictured below. I can see it's possible to purchase them from dealerships for around $350+, but there is a harness required for it to work in the newer 5th Gens. Someone named Old Red was making and selling such a harness on the T4R forum, but he seems to have disappeared: I was wondering if anyone knew whether it was still possible to acquire one? Or if anyone has one they want to sell? Or if it's even possible to put one in a 2020 4Runner, with all of its new computers for the dash screens, infotainment, TSS, etc?

I have old red harness and the AMD... love it. Old red said he doesn't plan to return to doing the harness anytime soon on T4R. You can thank the mods on T4R for ruining one of the great mods available for our trucks.

Well I hope he sees this thread. Old Red, if you're reading this, I would be happy to buy a harness! Even willing to pay a bit more than that 50$ price tag you originally had them at...

Yep, I'm over here on this forum, I just don't check in that often or post a whole lot for various reasons.

I haven't done much on the harness side of things except for a handful of the premium mirror harness sets since the whole issue over on the other site. You can read the story on the other site. I won't rehash it here, but that is one of the reasons I no longer openly document my material.

As far as the accessory meter display harness goes, I am currently redesigning it alongside some new stuff. The original harness used a connector that has since been discontinued by the OEM manufacturer, so that is the main reason I stopped making them. Once I used up the limited supply that I was able to get a hold of, that was it. All the forum stuff on the other site became added reasons on top of it.

I hate to burst your bubbles guys, but @Daytonaviolet and @Gatnos this mod won't work for your rigs. Sorry guys.

This display will only function if your vehicle is a TRD PRO (15-19) , Trail Edition (15-16), TRD Offroad (17-19), or equipped with Crawl Control & MTS. You need to have a compatible instrument cluster and overhead console with the CC & MTS switches for it to work (All this info was documented in the old thread pre-deletion).

SR5 and Limiteds utilize a different cluster, and lack some of the wiring to support those components and the display. I was only able to do it on my SR5 after swapping clusters, the overhead, and a few other things.

As far as 2020+ TRD PRO/Offroad goes, I have been testing the display that I have with a family members 2020, and there are some software compatibility issues. This was somewhat expected with the new electronics, but I don't see it working reliably with 2020+ based on experiments thus far.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. It's unfortunate my vehicle isn't compatible, but I truly appreciate the effort anyways :)

I'm not sure how I will role it out to be honest. I think the days of me doing a large thread like I did in the past, or anything retrofit related on the forums are done. The large in depth stuff I used to document just seems pointless to do and spend the time formatting to the forum medium when someone can come along an erase it without justification. I'll be around on the forums (more likely here than T4R) and will try to chime in on threads when people are having electrical issues, and to help trouble shoot any way that I can. The other site is pretty much dead to me at this point.

Yeah, sorry man. I tried for a long time to find a work around for the 14 TFT AMD to work with our style instrument clusters, but I just could never get it to work. I haven't fully given up on it as the more I dig through stuff and experiment the more I understand, but it's slow.

Yeah, of course. Sorry I didn't have a better answer. Toyota changed a lot for the 2020+ and frankly while they look like 4R's they are pretty much a GX460 electrically at this point, sans the V8. My whole thing is reliability. Making it work is one thing, but having it work all the time is an entire different game.

Thank you Old Red. I had did this upgrade on my 2018 TRD ORP and loved it. I'm back in an identical 2018 TRD ORP, hope for some good news on the harness front down the road.

I think I finally got my hands on a harness!!

Now to hunt down the rest of the parts.

Any guidance on that? Keywords to use when searching local salvage yards maybe?

Looks like the part number for the screen is 83290-35090. It is roughly $350.

    Thanks gang

Congratulations on the harness. I'm still trying to figure out how to go about that. I did PM Old Red.

re: Meter. I took a chance on the amber one (part ends with 40 or 50, I think the blue is 90?) from E-Bay; I remember reading a post sometime ago that someone got the compass and the clock to work by simply replacing the clock with the accessory meter. Unfortunately I couldn't get mine to light up (Perhaps mine is not working?). So since this post popped up again, I took my meter apart this afternoon to see what's inside.

In short, there is a row of surface mounted LEDs (Not sure the color, I assume they are amber - couldn't test, don't feel like desoldering them, but perhaps I will take one out eventually to see what color they are, it is possible they are also white). There's also an amber filter underneath the LCD. So I believe it is possible to convert the orange one to a blue one by swapping the orange semi-opaque foil filter for a blue one, and possibly, if needed, swapping LEDs to the blue color..

IIRC, in the lengthy thread on the other forum, (now deleted) the amber one would not work. Maybe Old Red will verify the part number for you.

Let me chime in here so that everyone is on the same page since this info was deleted on the other site. I outline all of this in the newer PDF I put together.

All displays have the P/N 83290-350XX with the last two digits denoting the part and application.

That said, if you are looking at a display, you won't know what it is without powering it up, or seeing the housing stamp. If you are ordering a used part, make sure you know what it is so it will work. The 2010-13 display has both the orange LCD and orange TFT P/N embossed on the white plastic housing. The stamp on the top of housing tells whether it is the LCD (which will not work) or the TFT.

    So there is not any confusion;

    83290-350XX

    2010-13MY

-40 is Orange TFT, stamp "5" COMPATIBLE
-50 is Orange LCD, stamp "6" NOT COMPATIBLE

    2014MY

-90 is Blue TFT, stamp "F" COMPATIBLE
