“Dipped” Wheels questions

Greetings-

I have a couple questions for those of you who have painted your wheels with peelable paint (PlastiDip, Hyperdip, etc) -

1. What did you do about the lug nuts? Did you leave them bright, dip them with the wheels, or replace them with black factory lug nuts? If you dipped them how do they hold up during tire changes?

2. In general how does the coating hold up during tire servicing? Does it get damaged during rotation/tire replacement?

I have plastidipped wheels. I used 1-can of basic black and then 1-can of color from DYC per wheel. I expected it to hold up for about a year before falling apart, but that year is up and it's still in great shape. It's held up to a decent amount of snow, dirt, rocks, and surprisingly even one tire change somehow.

I think the prepwork and thickness/layers of the dip I used has helped with the longevity.

I purchased a set of black lug nuts to better match.

 

don't dip the lugs, it will come right off the first time you rotate the tires. i had my wheels dipped on my tacoma before I went to the pro wheels. it held up for years with no touch-up.

 

That’s what I suspected.

In general I’ve heard that it’s surprisingly durable, but I suspect a careless technician would damage it during an actual tire change.

I guess I’ll worry about that when the time comes. Thanks for the reply.

 

i probably had 8 rotations at the dealership before I upgraded my wheels. i don't recall them getting beat up, but it has been 2-3 years.

 

Plasti-dipped mine before it was two weeks old in 2019. Had new tires put on and they did some damage. No other damage in over 2 years of Idaho winters and running on gravel roads. Held up surprisingly well.

Got a wild hair back in April and decided to remove the Plasti-Dip and spray them a burnt gold. Used my electric pressure washer and they were bare in about an hour.

After over two years of hard use...



After an hour of pressure washing...



And then after repainting them with a metallic Krylon burnt gold. They are holding up well so far with no blemishes.

 

I did mine about 6 months ago, and they held up well so far. I've done my own rotating, so I am careful and left the lugs unpainted. If you pop the Toyota logo out from the back of the hubcap, it makes them look a lot more polished when you pop them back in after painting the rest.



Also, that is like 4-5 coats of Plastidip from a kit off dipyourcar.com

 

Thanks guys - I think I’m gonna try a Hyperdip black kit from DipYourCar and leave the lug nuts bright.

 

I’ve been putting off plasti-dipping my wheels for months, the gears just been sitting in my closet. Taking this as my sign to finally do them this weekend. Thanks for the inspo!

 

I actually did mine in two different colors. I did bronze and Metallica grey. I popped the Toyota logo out of the center cap, left that and the lugs chrome

I have a confession...I haven't done my wheels yet, but I really want to. I live in Texas and it's been super hot. I know you're supposed to plastidip at pretty moderate temps and with lower humidity. Anyone have experience/success plasti-dipping in hot weather?

 

I live in the DFW area and I recently Plasti-Dip'ed my emblems. They have held up well so far, even after a couple car washes so far. If that helps.
