Hello all I have a 1998 4 runner automatic with 250k miles on it.

After the engine is warm I can hear a grinding/clicking sound coming from behind me when idling in drive. The sound is intermittent but when I am idling on a hill it can become very loud and constant. If I take it out of drive and go into Park or Neutral then it goes away.

Another strange way that I can make the sound happen happen is if I am in drive, foot on the break and put any window up past the stopping point with a hot engine. The engine sounds like it slightly looses power with the window switch held.

I put my head under while my fiance did the window trick and only she could hear the noise.

Could my battery from 2019 be dying? What other components interact when putting the window up in drive?

Thank you for any help or suggestions to try
