I had the fuel pump recall done today along with "required maintenance". In and out in just a little over 2 hours. I haven't had a chance to inspect the skids yet!

No offers yet. I was curious if they would say anything. But, based on what Vroom offered me VS. reality, I understand why they wouldn't.

    Update:

Got the fuel pump replaced last Thursday. Today, I took a little road trip down to Illinois to drop off a drive-shaft via TW express.

On the way back, just into Wisconsin, the 4runner bogged down, then regained power. This happened a few times as I worked my way to the right lane and put the hazards on. Finally it lost all power and I coasted as far as I could. I was able to idle it down a ramp and into a Walgreens parking lot.

I looked underneath for signs of a loose electrical connector, but didn't find anything. I idled across the street to a gas station and parked at a pump. I put in 2 gallons thinking maybe it would miraculously re-start and I could get it home. Nope. It was dead.

I called roadside assistance, and they sent a tow. In keeping with my awesome luck, I turned 60K miles YESTERDAY so I had to pay for the tow, $250.

    20210718_142554.jpg

I dropped it at the dealership that allegedly replaced the pump and put the key in a drop box. I'm really hoping it's just a simple fuck-up. I have a family vacation this Thursday - Sunday and nobody else really has a vehicle that can get back to the beach.

I cannot like @Thatbassguy picture or situation. I hope they messed up the install & nothing else happened. We have a trip planned to Colorado soon & the last thing we need is to be stuck in the barren part of this large state!
Glad you got somewhere safe. Keep us posted,
    Ryan.

Sounds like they installed a bad fuel pump. I sure hope we don't have to go through this whole fuel pump recall again.

FYI, you can add towing onto your auto policy really cheap.

What a terrible experience, good thing you rung it out on a test run before your big trip.

Lately I’ve been noticing posts in the other T4R.org forum of several recalled fuel pumps failing, usually due to the dealer f-ing up the installation. Seems there’s an O-ring that’s damaged or compromised somehow during re-assembly.
It’s not too hard to believe they’re hurrying the process and get careless.

Check it out, starting at post #293:

Right now the plan is to have them reimburse me, since it's obviously something they did, or didn't do that caused the failure. I went through their 800 number thinking they should cover the tow.

Thank you for this information! I will mention it to the service manager when I call there today.

I would place a bet on dealers/"techs", using the old gaskets.

I already received a phone call from a service manager regarding the situation. He assured me they're going to get it figured out ASAP. I'll update when I hear from them again. I did mention the o-ring issue I have read about.

I was impressed that the guy called already, even before business hours. Hopefully this is a good sign.

I had the dealer do the fuel pump recall on July 1st. I removed the fuel tank skid plate to avoid stripped mounting bolts.
I wasn't able to check out the repair when I picked up my 4Runner because it was raining.
When I got home and checked it out, I found both fuel tank mounting bolts were left loose, just put in by a couple of threads.
With out removing the skid plate, I would not have seen that the tank bolts where not tightened.
After looking over the repair invoice I also noticed that they had to replace a fuel line that they broke when they removed the tank.
Up till now no other problems with their shoddy repair.

    Update:

Hats off to Don Jacobs Toyota!

I just got a call from the service manager I spoke with this morning. He said that a seal (most likely the o-ring that has caused others issues) had worked it's way out. 4Runner is back running.

And, before I could say anything, he says he needs to see my tow bill so he can reimburse me. I am so glad I don't have to fight him over it!

I realize that getting it right the first time would have been ideal. But, everybody fucks up. I know I do. Making things right is all you can do at that point. And, these guys have been great to work with in general.

That's good to hear. I figured they would take care of your towing bill.

This is why I've been a Toyota fan boy for over the last 20 years. In my experience, they stand behind their products more so than other manufacturers. :)

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.

Sort of sad, though, that @Thatbassguy had to go through all this due to his truck going in to a dealer for a "fix", that actually made things worse...all's well that ends well, I guess.

I do agree. 60K flawless miles with a "faulty" pump, and it craps out within 300 miles after the swap. I am slightly nervous about the o-ring popping out again in a less convenient location. I wanted to mention to the service manager that I regularly drive to places that a tow truck won't get to.

I'm considering purchasing an extra o-ring and keeping it in the tool kit in case I should need to repair it again in the field. I might see if there's a tutorial and check that I have all of the necessary tools in my kit as well.

I'm also half tempted to replace the o-ring myself as a precautionary measure as I'm not sure I trust the work of their "tech" at the dealership. I'm hoping it was just a botched install and they paid extra attention when they reinstalled everything.

It would be a horrible job to drop the tank in the field but I guess better than having to get towed by some off road specialist tow truck.

I imagine that big red gasket is the o-ring in question. Probably got twisted, pinched, or otherwise damaged during reinstallation. The video says it does not come with the kit, needs to be ordered separately. Maybe the old one was reused.

Just had mine done. 1/4 tank and dropped skid plate before going in. It was finished in under 2 hours.

Crummy quality, but a screenshot from a video of this past weekend's shenanigans.

Edit: this was my friend driving. I let him and my brother both take a spin around the beach. It was cool seeing how hard those Bilsteins really work.

Just my .02. Every fuel pump i have ever changed (in the tank), requires a new gasket/seal because once they get wet from fuel, they expand. They look perfect but they will be a touch larger and won't fit as it should. I have used old ones in the past (on a ford) with success, but it's a cheap part to replace... If you do it yourself. Also, get a cheap fuel pump tool, i wouldn't want to do the old hammer and screwdriver on the plastic lock ring.

hey we just got ours the other day. 2021. Went to gas it up and it was running and there's a heck of a noise coming out of the gas tank or pressure? I'll have to check again. Is that normal with 4runners? Just seemed odd. Never heard anything quite like it. I don't notice anything with the cap on.
