I always got pinging in my 2nd gen Tacoma’s with 87 on inclines + taller gears before a downshift. When I went to premium the knocks went away. So, I run premium in my 4runner now, too.

I’m not here to argue. Just sharing my experience and what I will continue to do. The drivers manual says to run “87 or higher”. I run higher.

Same thing would happen to me with all my other cars (all of those being pretty high mileage vehicles). 87 would always ping, 92 would not.

Every once in a while I hear my 4Runner ping at low rpms/inclines, but for the most part it runs really nice on 87. I suspect as the motor gets older, it will start pinging more and I'll have to switch to 92.

Hmm...If it comes to that I'll definitely check with some of the shops around here and see what they run. Thanks!

I'm a little bit shorter sitting at 2.5" Front, 1" Rear. Not too very far off, so...maybe I'd be okay-ish.

I 100% get it! I am very pragmatic / frugal - but my wife says I am cheap! I am self employed and therefore can write off about 40% of the cost of this 2021 Pro 4R otherwise I probably would have purchased a ORP or kept driving the Crosstrek. It's just a vehicle that can be lost in a instant at any moment on the road. Good to have your financials in good order! A vehicle is just a tool at the end of the day for most of us!

No such thing as a dumb question.

I suspect their use of "ping" is the same as what some of us know as "knocking". In other words, a knocking noise is the result of premature ignition inside the engine cylinders. In many instances, it can be tied to the octane content of the gasoline you use. That being said, most modern engines "tune" themselves to prevent this from happening on a regular basis. Hope this helps.

Installed Wellvisors side window deflectors. Originally tried the AVS ones but the fit on them was crap so I sent them back to Amazon. These Wellvisors the fit and finish is spot on.

After much navel gazing, I ordered a Sherpa rack today. In a couple of months I'll be posting a pic of it on the 4R. :)

Any thoughts from your co-worker? My main concerns were quality of the mounts into the factory mounting holes avoiding leaks, weight, and the ease of configuring the crossbars.

Has never happened to me in old carbrurated engines, or fuel injected.

What are those roof rails that you have? I'm waiting now for local powder coat company to clear their backlog so I can get my OEMs blasted and done. Really don't like the OEMs so still looking for alternative ideas. Yours look good!

Yep, this. When they tune for fuel efficiency, you can get some pinging if the mapping isn’t just right. For the most part it’s perfect in the 4runner. Once in awhile under certain loads and speeds, you might get some knocking, but the ecu is mapped to keep that from happening. They nailed the ecu mapping in the 4runner IMO. Overall, it’s great.

If it ever does ping (under the aforementioned load/speed circumstances), if you just tap a little further into the gas pedal it’ll downshift and stop. But I find that higher octane avoids this altogether.

In reality, it’s not something to worry about.

They'll fit on any 5th Gen 4Runner, mine is a 2021. They don't make them anymore though so used is the only source :/

Figured I may as well go all-in and I'm looking into swapping out my stock SR5 wheels for a set of 17x8.5 -10 offset Level 8 Slingshot wheels. Now to just see where I can get the best deal on them and pull the trigger!

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
Another Mark Twain Mafia ride. Explored some new (to us) trails in the National Forest. They were thick with brush. We moved a bunch of downed trees via Winch, Snatch Block, Snatch Strap, and Brute Force - AKA Skip's Excursion. I also added to my pinstripe collection. Thinking rhino line paint job in woodland camouflage.
