I ran my Limited again, just for sh*ts and giggles. Carmax offered 1K less than I paid OTD a little more than 1 year and 9K miles ago. Not as good as the offers people are getting on ORPs (espec since I paid about $4500 less than MSRP). But still it's pretty amazing -- selling it would mean it'd have cost only $83 a month to have it.

Not that I'm gonna sell it. My reasons for buying it remain the same. I really like it. What would I even replace it with?

Ironically, my bride just bought a new SUV. So now we have two. She had major envy over my 4R! I never thought we'd need two vehicle like this, but even still I'm not selling.

Clearly, the play now is not to sell but rather to add to the fleet -- a small sports car with decent MPG! :bananadance:

I believe it's the MORRVAIR. Yeah, that thing is a beast. It turned out great though, the paint and body look terrific and it's definitely unique. I think being that he did most of the fab work and probably had a lot of the major pieces (engine & drivetrain) hanging around, he's probably got less than one might think. I'm sure the paint was the single biggest expense, since he farmed that out.

I really love that vehicle because it combines my 3 favorite auto genres: offroader, "dare to be different" style hot rod, and wagon.

Interesting. I have a 2nd Gen (94) with only 78K original miles and it WAY undervalued in my opinion. I wonder what the market would be for this.

I used to listen to Dave Ramsey, and he would pose that question to people on the fence about selling a vehicle to help pay off debt. If the cost/value of the vehicle wasn't crazy when compared to the income/debt of the caller, he would ask the question and leave it up to them.

I have full skid and sliders on mine, and I think that's sufficient for anything that I'm going to run into in my area. Even if I lack clearance by being stock height, I can just drag it over whatever, haha. I was never one to spend all my money on mods, except for my first vehicle, a squarebody Chevy pickup. I even had a series of V8 Firebirds that I only mildly modded, just catback exhausts and intake mods. Other than purchase price, I've sunk way more money into my 2 wheeled hobby, mountainbiking.

I do want to start doing more traveling with the 4R, which will most likely be solo trips, so I'll probably start thinking about modding it for that. A winch/bumper, and suspension to handle it will probably be needed eventually.

I'm with you on the 80 series though. I think for an offroad build it's far superior, but OTOH the newest one is 24 years old. Toyota or not, it's an old vehicle that's going to need a lot of care and maint. Not sure driving one hundreds or thousands of miles at a time would be confidence inspiring. That's the same reason I don't want an XJ, which from a cost/performance standpoint is a screaming bargain compared to any 4R or 80. It's easy to make an XJ into a trail slayer, but I would not want to drive that XJ hundreds of miles on the highway, haha. The 4R is a nice (if a little spendy) compromise between the two.

My answer the the question... If I could go back in time, I would tell myself not to buy it in the first place and just continue to save $$. However, I did buy it, and it's been paid off for about 6 months, so I'm not sure the cash I'd pocket would be enough to make replacing it with something older/potentially less reliable worth it. I may pocket 10k, but really, what's 10k today? My brain tells me I should be trying to save up for a house, but 10k is a drop in the bucket, even just going into the down payment.

    *sigh* life is expensive.

Wow! Personally the 2nd gen is my favorite gen, I think it's the best looking, and I love the tailgate. I think what turns people off about the 2nd gen is the 3.0 V6, I never hear anyone say anything good about it.

For reference, I just saw someone on marketplace selling a 92 (Limited) with 200k for 16k. It's very clean, except the paint on the roof is faded/peeling. It looks new underneath though, as it spent most of it's life in Nevada. Interior looks very clean as well. 3.0 V6 was rebuilt. Not sure how that compares to yours.

The used car market might be starting to cool just a little bit. The 4Runner I traded in on 05/25 is still for sale, and it has been reduced again. Started at $42950, then to $40950, and now $39950. They have me $39176 for it, so they don’t have a lot of room left. I’m starting to wonder if they accidentally appraised it as a TRD ORP instead of OR base. Either way, not my problem.

similar boat for me. bought my taco back in 2016 for $32,000 traded it in last month for my ORP at $36,350 and dealer listed it at $46,000 and slowly lowered to $42,000 to 41 and now at $39,000

not our problem dealers overpaid but looks like customers are finally realizing it’s ridiculous to overpay for a used vehicle when new is about the same even if you have to wait a bit for your car

Except there was no "Limited" model in 1992. My 92 only has 142k miles with it being garaged most of it's life. There is no way I would get even close to 16k for it.

My bad, I checked the ad and it's a 95, not a 92. Has tan leather and gold emblems, the ones on the door say Limited.

Other than the paint on the roof it looks really clean, like every 4runner it's just an LS swap away from being a great vehicle.

I dropped my ‘19 SR5P at the dealer a couple of weeks ago. It sold for the full asking of $45,500 a couple of days ago. The delay was them waiting to receive the title, or so they told me.

I still get calls from dealerships. $55.5K was the most offered about 6 weeks ago. I just can't bring myself to sell it since all it would really do is pay off my loan and put a few thousand dollars in my pocket. Then I would have to find something else to drive. I love my 4R and know if I sell it I will never probably be able to justify buying another one. It does everything I need it to from camping to bugging out. I could live in this damn thing if I needed to.

That makes sense. 95 was the first year of the limited trim. Still way to high of a price.

Just got an email from my last Credit Union that I bought the 4R originally from. Then I refinanced it. They offered me a better APR for my 4R. My payment is going to drop which doesn't matter to me, but why give a bank more interest. My 4R was valued at $59K. Crazy times. 20K miles and 18 months old and worth $7K more than I paid for it.

I looked at the list and I am skeptical......no Jeeps on the list? They are one of the hottest vehicles on the market right now.
Where I live, I cannot walk down the street without seeing a half dozen or more .
They are on every block. teenagers, 20 somethings, middle aged, men women, transgenders, they all drive jeeps!

I’m skeptical of this also. Check out the methodology they used. It’s like data mining for your desired results.

In one two week period they looked at cars “listed for sale”. That probably means they have a search tool looking at all sorts of online websites where consumers recently have been shooting for the stars with listing their cars for sale. Doesn’t mean they sold at that price. And no mention of dealer sales comparisons.

Anybody on this forum seeing a used 2019 4Runner costing more than the same 2021 model at a dealer?

“iSeeCars.com analyzed over 470,000 new cars and used cars listed for sale between June 1st and 14th, 2021. New cars were from model years 2020-2021, while lightly-used cars were defined as used vehicles from model years 2019-2020 with mileage within 20 percent of 13,476, the average annual miles traveled in the US, according to the Department of Transportation. Low-volume models were excluded from the analysis, as were models discontinued prior to the 2021 model year. The average asking prices of the lightly-used cars were compared to those of new cars from the same model.”

I don’t think they are they are saying a 2018 or 2019 costs more than a 2021. I think they are saying a 2018 or 2019 costs more right now than they did when they were brand new.

Correction: Your quote is implying that a 2018 or 2019 costs more now than a 2021. Other articles I’ve read on this topic imply what I said above.

2018-2019 models absolutely cost more than a new 2021 in my area. There's only 5-6 new TRD Off Road 4runners within 500 miles of me that are $41-45k, while there's countless lower mileage used 2018-2019 TRD Off Roads that are mid to upper $40s :der: Same with trucks. I bought my 3/4 ton truck for msrp 2 months ago and now lightly used 2020 models are selling $8-10K over what a new 2021 goes for.

My 2019 SR5P sold for $45,500 last week. I don’t know if any dealers near me even have a new 4Runner. Everywhere I look lists then as “in transit” to the dealership. Several have “call for price” listed, so I’d say anyone that has a new one available is selling them for MSRP++. So I’d say no, any dealer with a 2021 SR5P in stock near me will have it listed for more than $45,500. Crazy!

Going to stop into the dealer that I ordered my Pro from tomorrow. Going to try to get my trade number locked in ahead of my vehicle delivery (around the 19-26th).

    2017 GX460 - base - 38k miles - heated/cooled seats - nav

Hoping for $37k which I don't think is unreasonable

I think you'd get $40K + selling that privately, so I think you'll get your number. Good luck!

Yeah this gives me time to see what I want to do before picking it up. It's currently a CPO car. I can't remember what I paid 3 year ago. Either $40,500 or $41,500

Normally I forego all the dealer options, but is there anything worth adding to the new purchase price that you did/wish you did?

I usually don't do tire protection. Sometimes on my wife's lexus though depending on how big/expensive rim replacement is.

Trade number on the GX is meh. Might look at other options to unload.

Side note, I want to pull a build sheet on my vin to make sure all options are on there. I know you can call toyota but I wanted a 3rd party check other than the sales guy saying it has everything I asked for.

Thank you. Wanted to confirm it had the sliding cargo deck. I was adding up the #'s from my washout sheet and was wondering what was throwing it off
