I am brand new to this forum, so please help a sista out?

I've had this p0440 code for 3 years now and I know there are a ton of forums about it so I apologize for the repeat. BUT I have been told everything from the canister itself to the vent valve to just the gas cap. Ive checked it all. Even took it apart twice to figure out what the hell is going on. I do smell gas, Ive replaced the vent valve and my canister is fine. I threw an alternate 02 snesor code the other day so I replaced those and yet here is the code again. I do have a rear seal leak, I know it takes a Toyota specific tool to press the bearring back in so I havent replaced that yet. Thats literally the only thing that is left to be replaced and I am at my wits end with this stupid code. Side note, my traction has been off for the length of the code so Im assuming the check engine light turns your traction off?

I can't help too much because I have a 4th gen, but have you actually tried replacing the gas cap? We used to have a problem with the evap can on my ex's PT Cruiser, and believe it or not, the 10 dollar gas cap actually fixed it.

Oh yes. The gas cap was my first fix, I get people throwing evap codes all the time and it's just a loose gas cap. I have heard that Toyota only likes Toyota specific or Denso gas caps but I wasn't sure if that was true or some redneck trying to be funny.

The Check Engine light should not have anything to do with the traction control light. I work at AutoZone here in TX and you should be able to go by any AutoZone and ask for a ABS code read using their orange scan-tool. Free of charge and i assume you will find an abs wheel speed sensor or something along those lines. as far as the EVAP code, It might be a punctured line somewhere, if you follow the evap lines you will find it. Soapy water will help if you can find where the smell is coming from.

Yeah I work at Pep Boys so we have the same reader and nothing pulled up. I really can't figure out a reason for the lights to be on and it's driving me nuts, unless the owner before me disabled them on purpose because that's how long they've been on. I appreciate your help, I'm in Texas as well!

When do you smell the gas? After you reset the code how long does it take before the check engine light comes back on, is it at start-up or during driving?

Also just because you have a rear axle seal leaking doesn't mean you have to replace the rear axle bearing. The seal is around $13.00 at Toyota and it takes only a few hours to replace.

I smell the gas only on the outside by the tank when I run it, but it's a strong smell and I can't find a leak. If I clear the code it turns off both lights but a couple miles down the road it turns back on.

I already have the seal and gear oil and rear brakes. I can't get to the seal without taking the bearing off which obviously I can't get off without hacking my axle. I can do the job myself no problem, I just can't seem to find someone to press it for a reasonable price:)

Check your fuel tank filler neck it might be cracked.:notsure:

I'll have to research the axle seal, I did one on my last 4Runner and all I had to do is remove the axle shaft?????

Yeah I've taken the rear end apart already so I'm good on that, I know what I need. I just gotta figure out this damn gas smell. I'll take it apart again I dunno.

Could be a Ignition Coil. I had this same issue and the same code. Found out when Ignition Coil went completely out. Replaced coil and like magic lights went out by themselves
