Noticed from old photos that my 4runners clear coat has further deteriorated since I bought it. When I first got it, there was only some minimal peeling under the rear passenger window, now its under both windows on the passenger side.

I tried waxing it from the get go, and even though I did it more than once every 4 months it still got worse. Its difficult to wax next to the black trim because wax shows up on it and is difficult to clean off once wax dries.

Is there any way to patch a peeling clear coat that doesn't look like garbage and lasts?

Unfortunately probably not a super easy or cheap fix. A lot of that clear coat would have to be buffed and wet sanded off. If you're lucky the base coat won't get burned in that process, and then it could be resprayed with clear coat.

Just depends what it's worth to you. Quotes are free so I'd get one from a body or paint shop. If you want to DIY watch some wet sanding videos and check out the 2K Clear Coat aerosol cans. They have a hardener in them so if you can control the dust in the environment and can learn how to spray properly these are a great option.
