Sorry guys...have not done a search.
Just looking for some quick help if anyone is willing.
Just got back today from only about a 200 mile trip up to our cabin. Just realized, few minutes a ago, that my driving lights are not coming on. Mine is a 2016 SR5 with only 33k miles on it. Driving light position is the first rotation on the column. Turn and nothing. I have parking lights, headlights and brights, just no DRL's.
    Help?

Thanks for responding Grant. Just wondering why both would go out at the same time. Are they on a different fuse?

    I've got a stupid question,

Was the engine running when you checked them?

I don’t know. You will have to go pop the fuse box and check out which fuse. That I believe rules out the bulbs. I just changed mine out last night for Lasfit bulbs. Super nice bulbs if you need new ones.

Were you parked with the parking brake set when you noticed this? The DRLs don't come on until you release the parking brake.

Duh...went out and tried that. Thank you, they came on. Didn't realize though that they come on in the " headlight position "
only, interesting is that they came on after applying the PB as well. Seems to me though, when I first got my Runner, ( approx 8 months ago ), that the DL's had their own position on the column arm...?
Good news is, the bulbs are ok.

So if the parking brake is engaged, it turns off the DRL's?

    That I did not know.

Yes, very interesting though. When I sat out there and released the PB, they worked as suggested by jmkulbeth, however, upon applying the PB again, they stayed on. I'm confused, which is not un-common.

Thanks for investigating this. I was pretty sure that the engine needed to be running, but I was clueless about the parking brake.

I will play with my truck and see. But not now, the garage is too hot.

I really don't understand the logic of the PB influencing the DRL.

I've never understood the relationship between the parking brake and the DRL's, but Toyota isn't alone on this -- many auto makers have the same set-up.

Once you release the parking brake and the DRL's come on, they stay on even if you set the parking brake again. Once you kill the engine that process will reset. Yeah, that also doesn't make sense, but that's the way it works.

This ranks right up there with the radio shutting off immediately when you kill the engine in Park, but will stay on if you kill the engine when in Neutral. Go figure.

I drove my Toy today and had a chance to play with the DRL and parking brake.

I didn't take notes but I tried different combinations of parking brake engaged/not engaged and different gear selector positions, all with the engine running.

I couldn't get the DRL's to turn off with the parking brake.

2018 SR5 non premium trim level.

If you turn the truck off, then set brake, the next time you turn the truck on the DRLs won't come on until you release the brake (and possibly shift into drive).

Otherwise the DRLs stay on once they come on regardless of gear position or brake position.

The DRLs can be aggravating especially if you want to use just parking lights on the side of the road or something. They will only work correctly if you turn off the truck, set the brake, then turn it back on and activate parking lights.

Since OP has a 2016, if he doesn't want DRLs ever:

I love driving lights. My original post was about them not coming on with engine off and parking brake engaged. I would never cut them off completely. Thanks for the info though!
