Hey all, I'm about to become a first-time T4R owner after a long history with Jeeps (yay!). I've been lurking this forum for months and doing research while waiting for the right vehicle and market conditions to simmer down.

Given the market, I'm convinced buying new beats buying used right now. If you're paying an inflated price, may as well be for a brand new vehicle that will hold a bit more value when things correct.

I had all but resigned to waiting for a 2022 ORP or Trail Edition because I really dig the Lunar Rock color and thought the market might adjust to the point where I could pay MSRP or a bit under, rather than over.

All in all, looks like the chip shortage isn't ending anytime soon, and a local dealer I've been working with has a decent deal on a 2021 SR5P. It's white (which is an acceptable color to me) and has a moonroof, all weather liners, and cargo tray — everything I want and nothing I don't. I plan on adding wheels, tires, lift, and suspension on my own afterward. Total is ~42.5k.

My question is: lock down the SR5P with the features I want, or wait for the 2022 lineup and the possibility of getting something that fits my needs in Lunar Rock?

The SR5P has the amenities I want, like a moonroof.
The Trail lacks those, but has the color I want (in 2022 allegedly).
I don't really want to spend for an ORP (nor do I really need it), though it has the best of both worlds in terms of amenities and color.

FWIW: I live in UT, go camping semi-frequently, and would like true off road capability, but probably nothing that would require a locking rear differential.

Feel free to weigh in, or call me an idiot, etc. :)

All I'm going to say is the hype around Lunar Rock will die off when there is a new TRD exclusive colour. No one talks about Voodoo blue anymore for instance.

If you really dig the colour and not the hype then wait it out but trust me, whatever 4Runner you get you will change your tastes to like to the colour of your truck.

Only advice is stay away from white. My previous Tacoma was white and finding out that Toyota uses single stage paint for their whites (yes you heard that right, base and clear are 1 layer) I felt cheated and ripped off.

i could not relate to your post anymore lol
had a 17 white taco and was very disappointed to see the paint slowly start peeling off in areas in only a few years

did end up trading that in the other week for my silver ORP and although silver wasn’t my first choice (would have preferred MGM) i have actually grown to love it and am glad i ended up with silver

I’ve heard 2020-2021 models years may be the target of collectors down the line due to the chip shortage. Who knows if that actually happens though.

I'd say it could come down to timing and budget. If the SR5P is now, vs who knows when for the 2022. Some guidance from the dealer(s) on this might be worth asking.

Myself, I'm waiting on the 22MY OR Prem for now. Figure I'll have to wait for either one to be built, and I can wait a bit longer. If the rumors pan out and that gets me LR, Blind spot and Birds eye (or whatever) than all the better tho I expect MSRP to increase

I'm not really familiar with the US trim differences but personally if it's a 4x4 for "true off road capability" I'd seriously consider a locker if it was available. Just another tool in the toolbox and don't think it would hurt come resale.

Yeah I’d be surprised if lunar rock is available and the body isn’t changing.

Ended up placing a deposit on the 2021 SR5P. If anyone is wondering, there are a few Toyota dealerships in Utah selling at, or below, MSRP. I personally got $400 off at Mark Miller Toyota in SLC. SR5P with moonroof, cargo tray, and all weather liners for $42.5k. Got an email today from another Toyota dealer selling SR5Ps for $49k... what a joke.

You should look at used ones two years old. Same price as new. It’s nuts
