Dont know if what i have done so far as mods but it is running for first time in 6 years. Someone butchered the electrical for some reason.(think possible last owner pissed off wrong person.)
Always wanted one. Have owned many vehicles over the years but never had an opportunity to get one these. Mine is 1986 first gen i guess you call it. Been sitting outside under tree for 6 years. Has not ran sometime before that.

Well i thank you all. Been a little busy workin on my Runner since I joined . When i got it didnt run, lots of electrical issues. Mostly from dumb shits messing with things they shouldnt. Been sittin lil over 6 years, had a saggy bottom, dry rotted tires, paint nearly destroyed by time under a tree, wheels built up with corrosion from years of neglect. S
Since its arrival there has been a ton of cleaning inside, wet sanding and polishing on the paint. Power washed whole underside and removed all the coming loose undercoating and painted it all with semi-gloss black paint with primer. Installed air bags on the rear to solve the saggy bottom issue.

Hey somebody tell me, am i supposed to be posting this somewhere else and if so how the heck do you do it? Look folks im old school but young enough to enjoy having this thing and want to share with others that are proud of theirs.

    Welcome from Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Don't forget a few little details while working on making your truck run.
Things like the water in the cooling system. I'd wager the system is chock full of rust and crud by now. Give the whole thing a really good flush, maybe several, then fill it up. You may well need to replace the radiator.
Use the Toyota Red coolant, in the usual 50/50 mix with distilled water. It's a little more expensive, but it's much better for these engines than the green stuff. With an iron block, and aluminum heads, you need something designed to prevent the differential metals corrosion they're prone to. The Toyota Red coolant is designed to reduce that as much as possible, the regular, green, coolant promotes the corrosion in our engines. Not a good thing.

I would open up the entire intake system, air Filter to throttle body. It is incredible where the local rodents can get into and make nests. Check the entire set of wiring in the whole truck for places the critters may have chewed it. They seem to have a passion for doing that.

Replace the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, things like that. They're probably in pretty sad shape by now. Same with the oil and filter. The transmission and differentials' oils probably need replacement, and lube up the drive shafts' u-joints real good. I wager the u-joints are near to frozen with rust by now.

Once everything's good to go, well, then GO! You've got a great truck, get it out where it belongs, off-road, and enjoy it. :)
Most of all, have fun! Otherwise, why bother?

Welcome EW from Western North Carolina.
You've got a great vehicle there. I too had a 86 and loved it until a friend from work at the time talked me into selling it to him. He needed a vehicle really bad, or I would still have it.

BTW, don't forget the timing chain if that has not been replaced! Very important!

    Oh, I dunno...
My 87 pickup is still running on it's factory timing chain, 372,000 miles, 35 years, so far. Still going strong, too. This Little Truck just keeps on keepin on. Simply amazing to me!
I should probably rebuild the carb one of these days, and it could use a new radiator. Other than that, still going strong.

No work on it until we get the 99 out off the shop, though. It's wildfire season, and I will not have a situation where we get told to run, and don't have anything to run IN.
We get the 99 back, and maybe a nice horse trailer, those things hold a LOT of "stuff", then I'll work on the pickup.

At least check the timing chain, though, as well as the guide and tensioner. Easy enough to do. Pull the valve cover, and you can LOOK down along the timing chain. You can even stick a screwdriver or something down there, and see if the tensioner and guide are still good. A nice, bright, flashlight is a great help, too. :)

    Have fun!

Problem is; if the timing chain ever breaks on the 22RE, it is an "interference" engine and it will be toast.
I think you've been lucky Patrick...and that's great. Recommended change interval is about every 85k miles.

Upload pictures! My dad had a 86' 4runner when I was a kid. Loved riding in the back with the roof removed and hanging onto the roll bar.

I think I got the one-in-a-million truck that just won't die. It laughed at the 85,000 mile mark. 4 times!

In fact, when it passed every 100,000 mile mark, I pulled over right where I was, and did the Happy Toyota Dance around my truck. I did have a cop pull in behind me at every one and politely ask just what the HECK (this IS a family type site) I was doing. All three of them got a huge laugh out of what was going on. America needs more happy cops :)

Anywho, every spring, during the tune up I do, while I have the valve cover off to set the valves, and check the valve cover gasket, I take a good look at the timing chain, it's guide, and the tensioner. So far, every time, other than a very slight amount of wear that's been there since I can recall, it all still looks in good shape. This truck will never need a new timing chain! Muahahaha!!!

<Ahem> Sorry. I just take repairs as they come. I didn't think these were interference engines, though. Well, I guess I'll just need some work done if the timing chain ever fails on me...

I'll try to get some pictures for you, gkomo. I don't carry a cell phone around with me, but I'm sure I will get a few pics off my lovely wife's phone. Eventually...

    Have fun, everyone!
