Did Toyota ever pair the diff lock with the 4 cylinder engine?

I hope to get a diff lock at some point in the future. I want to keep stuff Toyota, so I don't want to buy one from ARB or another company.

I've heard that when putting in the Toyota diff locker you have to do some wiring and swap ECU from another 4runner that had the diff lock. All these swaps I've seen have been on 4runners with the 5vz engine, never one with the 4 cylinder.

Did Toyota ever equip a diff locker on a base model 4runner with the 3rz-fe?

My thinking is that if Toyota didn't allow you to spec a 4 cylinder engine with the diff lock there is no way of adding the stock Toyota diff locker to a 3rz-fe equipped 4runner because you have no compatible ECU to swap in. Also my 4runner didn't have the optional ABS, so it would be quite an odd combination if such an ECU does exist.

 

Low range makes a harness. You can wire an e locker as a standalone.

 

To answer your question though yes, there was a 3rz with factory locker option. From what I know they were more common in Canada, with some being sold in the US.
