I thought the 4 runner used Port injection, but I noticed on Toyota site it stated they used direct injection. I believe port injection was the old way and all new cars now use direct injection. Can someone clarify this for me. thanks

This would be news to me. This is supposed to be an “ancient” engine.

The 1GR is port injection, not direct. The 3.5 in the Tacoma is direct and port injection.

Port injection in old, this is what you have on your 5th Gen, direct injection is the newer more efficient way of doing it but it’s proven very maintenance heavy because of problems with carbon building up on the back of the valves. Now they use both systems for different driving conditions and the port injection washes the back of the valves to avoid carboning. They started it with Lexus and I think maybe the 2017 Highlander was the first Toyota to use the dual injection systems.

    Ignition.... not injection.

It has coil on plug ignition.

Ok good. Back to enjoying my 4runner without having to worry about disassembly of top end to clean valves at 100k
