2022 speculation

We grew out of the 09 access cab, so I now have a double cab. I miss the 09.

 

I will tell you exactly why I wanted a Pro. I came from a 2018 Jeep Rubicon Recon on 37's. So top of the line at the time. When my Rubicon got death wobble, I knew I wanted a Pro. It looks amazing out of the box. I knew I didn't want to mod the Pro much, but knew the Eibach springs for the Pro were going to be available. Now I added 1.6" of lift and run 285's which is exactly how the Pro should look from factory. I was able to do that for $1500 for springs, install, alignment and tires. So happy with the look and ride. Someone might have more ground clearance, but they will also have way more into their suspension and tires than I do. I like the manual transfer case, factory locker and the look inside and out. I also had to have the rear sliding cargo tray. I needed it for camping which can be done in other 4R's. We all have our reasons for not buying top of the line just as some of us do for not buying bottom either. Not everyone wants to modify the shit out of their vehicles anymore. Yours looks amazing and I'm sure its awesome. I was just offered 10% more than I paid for the vehicle which I'm stupid for not taking, but I love my Pro. Nothing holds its value like a Pro. We both also know there is not much value in aftermarket add ons, but since you are keeping for a million miles your setup is great. I have never kept a vehicle for more than 2 years and I believe this will be the first one I do keep.

I've bought 2 Pros in the last 30 days and both were MSRP of 55k.

 

MSRP is just under $52K. What was added to push it up to $55K?

 

I bought a LR Pro three weeks ago for $2,000 above MSRP and the total was $54,783 to include $1,038 in stupid options. $169 - Pro Carpet Mats (comes with the Pro Rubber Mats, no need for the carpet mats). $160 - Black Out Emblems (ridiculous charge). $60 - Ball Mount (why would they randomly assume everyone needs a ball mount - will never use, my bike rack is on the vehicle 99% of the time). $649 - Predator-Tube Step (don't want and will remove soon). If I could have ordered the vehicle I would not have chosen any of the options.

Why a Pro? Debated for a long time whether to buy a ORP or Pro. Ultimately I liked the LR color and I have no intentions of modifying the vehicle. After three weeks I am really pleased with the vehicle and the color choice. I realize I paid $10,000 - $12,000 for $5,000 - $6,000 in upgrades. It's a tax write off for me and I plan to enjoy it for 11 years!

 

A modified SR5 has no appeal to me now or when I sell. If I want what I see in that picture, I'd do it to a Pro or OR. Seems like you are defensive.

 

Congratulations. Sounds like you got a great vehicle for a good price in this current climate.

 

$50k to some people is like $15k to others. For some people, money isn’t really an issue. They have plenty. The Pro looks cool, so they get one.

 

Defensive? I believe you might be using the wrong word to describe how I feel. I know what I wanted/needed and I have nothing to be defensive about. This is the joys of life we all get to make our own choices. You like your 4Runner and I like mine. My choice was predicated on fitting my family (4 kids and wife) in my 4Runner and having a ride that works for my needs. We as a family enjoy hitting the trails and seeing the roads less traveled. I am simply pointing out a fact that with $15k I was able to do a LOT with my vehicle and I just don't see where Toyota added $10-$15k more to the vehicle to make it worth it.

Lets be clear here I did start off my posts with saying... I know this might make some people unhappy (sorry in advance). You enjoy your 4Runner and I will enjoy mine and if for some reason we meet on the trail we can both have fun. I don't find joy in arguing/fighting or having a pissing contest with people. I put those childish things behind me a while ago. I hope you have as much fun with your vehicle as I am having with mine.

 

I didn't describe how you felt. I wouldn't know. I described how you were coming off with that post. For me, and many others, there is a significant enough difference to warrant the price difference. Your comment about "compete" with a Pro was what really put it altogether.

 

Yep. Free will. We all get it. Each person is unique and gets to make their own choices. Just simply want to understand numbers and have a mature discussion on the matter. Not trying to make anyone mad or make people feel bad. If I did I am sorry.

 

I should have elaborated on that aspect of things a bit more.

When I said compete I was talking about capabilities (as stated). Here is what I meant in a more elaborated form:

If you take a TRD Pro at MSRP and an SR5 at MSRP with the option to upgrade the SR5 with the money saved over the TRD Pro... Brought both vehicles through the same rigorous test. Which one would have more capabilities?

Would it be a draw?
Would the TRD Pro have more capabilities with the extra features like the multi-terrain select and such outperform the modified SR5?
Would the SR5 outperform the TRD Pro with the aftermarket features?

My point is not to come off in a rude way. I just feel Toyota is WAY behind on the engineering front (as I have read in countless posts on the forums). No front lockers, no disconnecting sway bar, no capability for stock 35" tires, no inner deadlocks like method wheels, no off-roading cameras, no skid plates to protect the other important parts of the car (transmission, transfer case, gas tank), no rock sliders, no trail turn assist, etc.

I know most people spending $50k+ aren't planning on bringing it to the rock gardens to get messed up anyway. But if even a good portion of the aforementioned items were included in the TRD Pro I would be like... Okay that makes sense. But a manual transfer case, multi-terrain select, rear locker, a 1/4" stamped aluminum skid plate, different interior upholstery, and speakers just doesn't add up to $10-$15k and so that is why I am genuinely curious.

As stated earlier though we all get to choose what we want and what appeals to us. I enjoy my 4Runner and it sounds like you enjoy yours. We can both go out to the trails to have fun and in the end Toyota and other companies get our money and we work to pay for it.

The joys we both get with our vehicles is seeing what most other people don't is what pays it off for me. Plus it is enjoyable helping other people during winter to pull them out of the snow so they can go to work and be with family. That is what I enjoy about having my 4Runner. I am 59 years old and like the clean stock look and capabilities of my 2021 Lunar Rock Pro! Been there done that with 76 & 77 Ford Broncos, 88 4Runner, 06 Jeep LJ Rubicon and currently have a 02 Z71 beater Chevy Suburban. Love the look of a modest lift and 285's down the road, but beyond that I have no need for all that other monkey business!

 

You’re not wrong, practically speaking, but don’t overthink it. Toyota aims to make some money. And buyers with $$ to burn get some cool and capable trucks off the lot.

I also think it’s great advertising for and superb marketing by Toyota. Sell a few pros for a big markup and sell a hundred thousand SR5’s that people think are pretty badass, too, and they can modify them to their liking.

It’s all market driven and pretty simple, really.

 

I agree with a lot of what you're saying @GrantA. An SR5 can be modified to be as capable as any of the other trims, IMO. Of course I also own an SR5

I think the biggest difference is the locker available on the upper trims. Of course that can be added (like you did).

Some will argue the crawl control features on the upper trims give you an advantage. They might be right, but driving skill goes a very long way in my book.

We've done this exercise on this forum before, but when you break down the cost between an SR5 and an Offroad, the Offroad is actually still a pretty good value for what you get. I forget exactly how much more they cost but I think we settled on $1,500? Was that it? Someone else will know.

When it comes to the Pro, yeah, I think they are pricey for what you get. But I understand wanting a truck with a different color, and something that comes from Toyota the way you want it without having to touch it. That can justify the price tag for many. For me, I'd probably opt for the Offroad and spend the savings on some Bilstein 8112/8100's, a decent looking roof rack, skids and sliders, wheels and tires, and still have some cash left over burning a hole in my pocket.

 

That would be the obvious exercise for someone seriously considering spending the extra ~11K over, say, a SR5 Premium - once you find out what the differences are. Truth is, the Pro trim comes with more than the risible, "is it the stickers".

Some of those items are additions (like the roof basket), some are an upgrade from base (like the tires and wheels) and some are intangibles (like inclusive warranty).

My white pro was similar, except led exterior lights, key lock pad and hood paint protecting film, but did have sliding rear tray Sticker was $54,686.00

 

I guess it all comes down to how much you value those extras.

My personal opinion is I don't think those extra component are worth the money because I can get better components for less money.

Some find value in those extras and just want to drive a vehicle off the lot without messing with it. I get that too......but you're paying extra for that convenience.

 

Wouldn’t it be nice if Toyota allowed you to custom build your own vehicle? All-a-cart kinda thing? Obviously within reason. You get convenience and I think Toyota would sell those like hot cakes. Things like:

• Off-road cameras like Bronco
• Full skid plates for gas tank and transfer case and transmission
• Front locker
• 3rd row seating on off-road models
• Multi-terrain select
• TRD suspension
• Capability for tire sizes up to 35” or at least 34”
• Etc.

If that was an option directly from Toyota that would be cool. But I guess they can’t keep up with current demand and what is going on in the market so I guess it makes it easier to not add all that extra stuff and leave it to the aftermarket community.

 

At the end of the day a stock $50k pro will be worth more than a sr5 premium that cost 35k but has 15k worth of mods done to it. Yeah you might find that one guy who wants those exact same mods but that will be rare. Just look at the carvana threads.

Yes you can make pro clones but look at vintage muscle cars, the original ss cars, they are worth way more than the clones even though they look virtually the same and sometimes more money was spent on restoring the clones

Also, in comments now saying BSM will be on trims TRD Off Road and up (had said on SR5 in vid, at least in Canada). Cement is gone and no AR on Off Road

I'm still wondering about panoramic view available on TRD Off Road. Have a suspicion it might only be TRD Off Road Pro.
