Thought i notice a little "less struggle", pushing past 40k, maybe it was starting to fail. It was a low volume recall issue.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
Leaving to bring it in in about 1/2 hour. They say 3 hours tops but I'm getting a loaner car. I do not have the patience to sit there for hours waiting. I'll let y'all know how it went later today.

Brought it in at 9 this morning and was told it would take about 3 hours. I got a white 2021 4Runner SR5 as a loaner. The biggest difference between the '19 and the '21 I found is the larger info screen which is nice. I called them at 2PM and they said it was just finished so it was 5 hours. Did they forget to call/text me? Who knows but I'm glad I had the loaner. Two things: I disconnected my Sprint Booster before bringing it in and man what a difference driving from home to the dealer. I'm so happy I have that thing, it makes driving the Runner so much more enjoyable! Secondly the 2021 had less power than my 2019. A difference I could notice right away going from one vehicle to the other. People say a less restrictive muffler and air intake makes no difference but I beg to differ. At least that's done, it was pouring rain so I haven't looked to see if they left out any bolts for the skid plate or anything but I'll look tomorrow.

Got my new fuel pump today. They kept it about 5 hours. There were 4-5 other 4Runners there probably getting a new pump too.

No issues as far as I could tell. I took a good look under the car and all the hardware appeared fine. I was pretty low on fuel because I wanted to test the low fuel warning light. It came on at 24 miles left. Took 19.4 gallons to fill tank.

I couldn't resist getting a Toyota hat. I wanted orange but all they had in orange was TRD Off-Road, rather than "Toyota".

Hope you guys won't flame me for wearing a TRD hat while I drive my SR5. ;)

Apparently not for ours... I dropped the skid plate & they said that wasn't necessary. :annoyed:

Peace of mind knowing they couldn't strip the bolts. I would drop the TRD plate when getting the "free" oil chages. Hopefully the recall was the last dealer trip for my little station wagon.

Well I finally got around to installing my C4 fuel tank skid. Until today I hadn't checked any of the fuel tank bolts after taking it in for the fuel pump recall. Sure enough, the tech tightened every bolt with an impact wrench. I had to use a breaker bar to bust them loose.

I've heard of some people having problems with the new pumps. Anyone here experienced any problems?

I read someone else post this yesterday in another section. On all the forums i have seen one post that experienced the sending unit/float not reading proper fuel level... And the above over torqued bolts. I was about to ask the same question.

Thanks. So far mine seems to be reading correctly so maybe I got lucky and the mechanic got it right.

To date- 300 miles later we have had no issues (never did). However our digital MPG readout has gone up by a constant .2mpg increase. We need to get out of town & check road mileage. We go just a few blocks or miles every couple days (wife working from home) 13.2 is average now @ 13.4. Hand calculated is real close. Again, need to run it & report back.

Got my 2018 done on Friday. Dealership did a great job - no rounded bolts and none missing. Tech even texted me an inspection walk-around video as he was finishing buttoning everything back up. Nice touch. I'll get underneath and check the torque on the bolts, though.

To anybody that had it replaced, did you inspect your vehicle beforehand? I’ve noticed a odd sound coming from the gas tank area that sounds like the pump isn’t working properly. It almost sounds like it’s sucking air in and pushing it through the lines but the engine has no symptoms correlating to fuel system issues. Curious to know if there was anything wrong that was detectable and noticeably different now.

I know the sound you are talking about. Noticed it a few times at the driver's side rear wheel when airing up/down. Never caused any problems in the operation of the truck....almost sounds like a gurgling. It was not constant and seemed to have a correlation to the amount of fuel in the tank as well.

I just had the pump replaced last week and have not listened to see if this noise is still present.

No noise yet. Can you hear this inside the cab? Sounds a bit odd.

I could never hear this from the cabin but I noticed it before the pump was replaced. Haven't bothered to check and see if the noise is still there.

How would one do to check this? Is it a certain fuel level? Can you hear it @ idle?
What & how should I listen for this?
    Thanks,

I heard it at idle, back by the rear wheel well on the tank side. Maybe heard it four of five times since I have owned the truck since July 2019. Fuel level was always above 3/4 tank.

Are you sure this isn't part of the evap/ emissions filter for the gas tank? My only thoughts & only noise I have heard that was odd.

It’s not the noise that’s heard with the engine off that so many people are curious about. This occurred, or at least I heard it when the engine was at idle and I was airing up or down that left rear tire. It very well might be part of the evap system, I don’t know.

Pump can only be heard from outside, beneath the drivers side passenger door. It’s a really weird noise like air is getting sucked into the fuel lines. My VIN doesn’t show up under the recall so I thought this would be a good place to check. The noise is constant. I believe the evap system is in the rear central area of the truck and this noise can be heard coming from the drivers side gas tank area.

    Same Pump.

A production change was made and/or the deficiency in materials does not include all pumps.

We had the recall done last week. Ever since that day, the 4Runner seems to struggle less driving up steeper inclines and generally has a bit more pep, get up and go. Perhaps the original fuel pump caused several issues.
