Fumoto Oil Drain Plug

Who has one, how well does it work and do you recommend one? Which one do you have?

 

I have this one. It's been perfect so far. No leaks. No oily hand from removing the plug. I've heard nothing but positive about them.

 

I have the f-103n (n for nipple) so you could attach hosing to it if desired. I don’t.
I love it. Makes oil changes such a breeze.

 

Seems like a good option for those (like me) with heavy skids that they don't want to remove every time they do an oil change.

 

I still use the OEM that came with my 2005 runner. No drips yet!

 

Its great. I have one on my Tacoma w/skidplates and my motorcycle (also w/skidplates). Takes longer to drain when cold, but just change it when its warmer, your not going to have to open a bolt and douse your hand in hot oil anymore.

 

As mentioned, it drains a little slower but it's clean and easy. I always put them on any car I plan to keep/do my own maintenance on.

 

We have the F133N Fumoto on ours, it's the 3rd time we have replaced drain plugs with the Fumoto. No problems with them, makes oil changes not messy.

 

I took mine off. Works as supposed too but I got tired of waiting for the oil to drain. It was on for a couple of oil changes then I removed it and went back to stock plug.

Nope, things to do and one is NOT to wait on oil to trickle out.

 

Definitely clean oil change now. Yes, it does take a little longer, but I like it better for clean work.

 

I might have to order one for the GX and 4runner.

 

I installed one in the fall for the first time when changing oil in the runner and taco. Just drained the 4Runner this weekend, I’ll make a shorter hose to go into the pan, but using the hose to go direct to the old oil jug was nice.

 

Just used both of mine today on the 4Runner and the Outback.

Keeps things so much cleaner.

 

Definitely like it, just open it up while you change the freaking horrible canister filter. Only thing bad I have heard is because the nipple threads up inside the oil pan higher than the bottom of the pan, some sediment gets trapped.

 

I don’t think that’s true.
I have a similar device installed; Valvomax. There’s a FAQ on their website that addresses it.

“Q: Does any oil get left behind in the oil pan?
A; No, the valve is designed to sit flush with the inside of the pan, thereby releasing all the oil.”

I would imagine Fumoto paid special attention to this detail also.

However, for the doubters, there’s an easy way to verify this. Drain your oil with the Fumoto, remove the valve and see if any more oil drains out.

It is unlikely that a Fumoto valve will stick out into your oil pan because;

• Most oil pans have an internal thread holding structure inside the oil pan and most drain plugs have a shorter thread than the oil pan thread.

• Fumoto valves usually have the thread that is about the same or even shorter than ones of regular oil drain plugs.
• Therefore, it is unlikely that your Fumoto valve would be sticking out inside the oil pan. Your Fumoto valve would allow you to drain just as much oil as your original drain plug.

 

I guess what I read somewhere was not accurate. Go figure. But I take solace that if they had to put it in their FAQs I wasn’t the only one.

 

Thats what I always thought, and I did it anyway....

I figured leaving less than 0.1% of the old fluid, who cares. And even if some gunk was left.. Its metal, heavier than oil, wont ever get sucked up off the bottom of the pan anyway.

 

I've run the fumoto valve on my previous cars and no complaints! I just ordered the new larger body valve for the 4R and will be installing it within the next couple weeks.

 

I haven't put one on my 4Runner yet but I ran them on two Blazers (one for 10+ years), two Siennas with no issues at all. I did put a small hose clamp in front of the valve handle as a 'safety" but probably not necessary

 

Had one on my old BRZ and it made oil changes that much easier and cleaner, will be getting one for my 4Runner. I wish I could use one on my R, but VW decided it wanted to use a plastic oil pan with one time use plastic drain plugs ... those crazy germans.

 

They come with a little plastic piece that works as a safety.

 

I tried this on tundra. And a fair amount came out afterwards.

 

Hmmm.., in that case it would be good to do some measuring of the valve thread height compared to the OEM drain plug. Then decide if you could machine, grind, or file it down to match. Or contact the manufacturer and complain about it. They’d probably be glad to know this, make a design change, and give you a proper replacement. Or at least give you your money back.

BTW, a while ago I checked into the Toyota TIS repair manual for my model year for the oil capacities. The Dry Fill is 7.5 US Qts. A regular drain and fill with filter change is 6.6 US Qts.
So that implies that 0.9 quarts of oil is still clinging to the surface area and innards of the engine that you can’t get out anyway!

Coming from sports cars with low clearance and plugs being the lowest spot, I have seen/heard horror stories of this type of plug getting hit and dumping all the oil. I doubt it would be a problem on such a high truck unless you are off-roading hard.

 

Ok yeah I was thinking that might be a possibility also…kinds scary.
