I just picked mine up today and bolt also exposed. I have zero concern about it

Ok, I admit I got a little carried away with the TSB/recall remark when I read about it being suggested more people email or contact Toytota about the issue...

In your case, since you have the rust thing happening, I'd just treat that the best way you feel necessary and call it a day. Unless you feel like taking it up with Toyota...your choice.

Things just don't rust where I live, so issues like this don't bother me. It's the things that squeak or rattle make me want to sell my vehicle. :angrygirl:

My original though was to hit it with a wire brush and some Flex Seal. That's probably what I'll end up doing anyway. It just seems like something Toyota could have done better with. Probably a little OCD on my part. :D

If these bolts were coated before, but the all of a sudden werent, I bet bean counters were involved. Maybe it is much cheaper over the long run for the coating to be put on first in the assembly process.

I am a bean counter and if it were me I’d say we need to cut down on the extra material by using a shorter bolt. It won’t penetrate the undercoat and should be cheaper for a shorter bolt. And no potential tsb $ loss.

I called today to have it documented.
The CSR suggested having a dealer look at it and advise.

I'd call but I don't have the available blood pressure today to deal with Toyota. lol I kid.

Happily, my local dealer gifted me a new TRD Pro skid plate when I found that they messed up my stock one during oil change.. so so far so good without having to get Toyota Corporate involved...

At this point, my dealer practically rolls out the red carpet when they see me coming. :hattip::laugh:

    'Cause Homey don't play dat.

Bean counters pay attention to everything. Noticed this yesterday. It appears McDonalds has decreased the length of their plastic straws.

No kidding. They remind me of shoe string potatoes. Remember they were packaged in a can - very popular with us as kids......they may still be around?

No surprises here - I've got 'em poking out in both rear wheel wells on a '21 Pro . Don't love it, but doesn't feel urgent. I will point it out to the dealer at the 5k service and see what they will offer to do about it.

Re: bean counters, don't get me started on our incredible shrinking toilet paper rolls. I'm tempted to just go "paperless" and get a TOTO Washlet. People swear by them...

I am bean counter also, but myself there are certain things I am willing to pay more for to have quality, that is why I chose one of these vehicles based primarily on good reviews. I believe in going the extra mile and doing it right. Historically, Japanese vehicles were known more so I thought for fit and finish quality, while this is not a major issue it certainly does not seem like the proper way to send out a finished product. I am just not one to take shortcuts; do it right.

Perhaps they've recently become a major stake holder in Flex Seal?

For what it's worth, I picked up my Lunar Rock on Wednesday w/ 7 miles, and the bolt is exposed as well.
I think I will spray it myself, and then assess the situation on my 1st check up.

Sorry to hear that ClopezNV; it is something we should have to deal with when purchasing new $40-$50k vehicle.

Don’t take it to the dealer over this. Just spray some black coating on it. Rustoleum paint, rubberized undercoating, or smear some black silicone seal or caulk or black E6000 adhesive on it. It’s really no big deal.

Dropped mine off last night to be inspected.

BTW they had a brand new cement 4X2 crewman next to me in the service bay with a $6k “market adjustment”

The dealership is saying it’s normal since they see it on other vehicles. I will probably just cover it on my own as others have mentioned.

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't the right side photo look like the bolt is missing? If so, THAT is a problem...

Maybe it really is ok, but you have to admit its sort of sloppy to just leave that exposed. Maybe its too much to expect spending $40k+ though. I guess choose the battles as they say

If you didn't even know, you wouldn't know. Good god, i WISH shit like that, was what kept me up at night. You sir, are lucky.

Edit- then again, i doubt you even use the 4runner, as a 4runner. No worries. People are different. No doubt about that.
