More info would be helpful. Under what conditions is there a loss? When does it get hot? Every time you’re driving or only under certain conditions? 4 cylinder, v6? I think on the v6 the timing belt comes off. I would suspect maybe you didn’t have the engine set to TDC before taking off the belt and that’s what’s causing your loss of power. As far as the over heating issue, did you replace your thermostat? It could be stuck and not opening.

    Check your timing.

Definitely check your timing. Pinging could be a sign that the timing is too advanced. You should always check ignition timing after doing anything related to the timing belt. If timing is ok I would see if you have a plugged exhaust. A plugged exhaust will cause your truck to run lean which will make it ping, over heat, and have no power. One way to check for a plugged exhaust is to pull the upstream oxygen sensor (sensor before the catalytic converter) out, drive it, and see if it has power.

Jump the diagnostic connector, terminals te1 and e1 with a paper clip, start the truck, make sure engine light is flashing, connect the timing light to the battery and the pickup to the wire for the number 1 cylinder. Spec is 10 degrees BTDC. There should be mark on the pulley and timing cover. Loosen distributor bolts and turn distributor until the mark on the pulley lines up with the 10 mark on the cover. If you can’t get the marks to line up pull off the timing cover and see if the cams will line up with the marks

First don’t drink and work on your truck, LOL. Then try Google and YouTube. Tons of info on the subject & videos too .

    I'm new to having a 4runner - just a few weeks.

But didn't you need to remove the timing belt to change the water pump? If so, your cam timing may be off. I think that could explain loss of power and quite possibly the pinging - especially if you didn't touch ignition timing to replace the pump.

Running hot might also be explained with bad cam timing in that the exhaust valves are not opening at the proper time.

Take my advice with two grains of salt, but that's my guess.

I'm on the OEM water pump that came with my 2005 4runner. I have new spares for various parts because the car is in the Bahamas and there is only one parts place and dealer for parts here and the prices can be astronomical, or not in stock.

OEM alternator, exhaust, radiator. Amazing Toyota cars and trucks they build.

Last week I had a new evaporator core put in, and a few years ago the AC compressor was replaced. Freezing cold right now - as we head into the hot, hot Bahamian summer sun.

    Amazon.com: Denso 476-0040 A/C Evaporator Core: Automotive

This is the second evaporator core that has been replaced. The original that came with my new 4runner failed in 4 years.

    Part was $90 at Amazon.
