Should I Stay or Should I Go; Fuel Pump Recall

Like many of you my 2018 SR5 finally made it on the fuel pump recall list October 28, 2020.

The latest Toyota tech bulletin I could find said that there would be a remedy (new pump) for my T4R late March or early April 21'. I am beginning to lose confidence with this date assessment.

I wasn't that concerned about it, understanding that it would take time to produce new fuel pumps for millions of cars, plus I haven't strayed to far from home thanks to the pandemic.

I still drive it knowing I'm well within towing distance to my local dealership.

But now I have a tentative road trip planned in May and I'm a bit concerned taking off down the road for several hundred miles knowing that I may experience a fuel pump failure and be stranded.

After doing an exhaustive internet search, I have been unable to conclude a good estimate of how many Toyota's have actually had a fuel pump failure.

I have a couple of questions, have any of you 18-19' owners had the pump replaced yet?

Are you guys continuing your road trips and not worrying about it?

Just curious what you're thoughts are.

I did a 3800 mile road trip fully aware of the recall with no worries. I don’t think I’ve seen a single post on this forum about anyone experiencing a failure.

Yes, that is what I observed too. I think I've read some of the Tacoma community having pump issues. Just not sure, I tend to be a worry wart. Of course most of the things people worry about never happen.

If there was a systemic issue you would think it would pop up on this forum and the other T4R forum.

It would be nice if Toyota wasn't so hush hush about it. You know they have the numbers.

 

I have a 19 and I'm not even thinking about the recall. In fact, the only time it comes to mind is when these threads pop up. I have heard of zero total failures that leave someone stranded.

We just did 2600 mi in 6 days unsupported through the Mojave Desert... you can probably keep driving on a few hundred mile road trip.

 

If your that scared of it, buy the parts and install or have Toyota install them.

Sounds like I'm the only one here concerned about it.

 

Mine failed....

 

Toyota confirmed defective fuel pump and keeps vehicle put me in a loaner till they bought it back in Dec 2020....

 

What year was yours that failed?

They actually bought the car back rather than fix it?

Purchased 05/19 and early Sept fuel pump went @ 70 MPH and stalled restarted it and drove it to the dealership. They had no ETA on fuel pump replacement.

 

Wow, that sucks. Thanks for the info. Hopefully they will soon have fuel pumps available for the 18-19 4Runners.

I've seen a few posts by owners of 14-15's that had their pumps replaced.

 

It was a strange situation as I was going back and forth to Fl in their loaner car which when I got had 1000 miles on it and in 3 months it had 26,000 miles on it. So come to find out your not to take loaner cars out of State and they were pissed. So I told them I would be doing at least 8 more trips to Fl. They then contacted Toyota and we worked out a deal for a swap.

Although I don't like the fact that the car has a potential serious failure point, I'm glad it's being addressed.

Many years ago, 80's, I used to drive Fords and it was such a hassle trying to get them to fix defects. As a matter of fact my 87 mustang had recalls on the paint and catalytic converters and they denied my request to fix the issues.

That's when I became a Toyota fanboy.

 

It worked out okay as I had a TRDOF Premium with KDSS but the vehicle was $3,200 more and I could not get them to make an even swap for that one. I did get all the extra tech stuff that I didn’t have on the 19 and the current upgrade on the new 2021.

 

So it sounds like even this "failure" didn't leave you stranded... truck restarted right away. I can see the potential concern with a crash due to stalling, but that doesn't register higher in my mind than being stranded.

I'm not so worried about being in a crash but I don't want to be in a situation where I'm stranded on the open road. That would be a major PITA at the very least.

 

It did restart but did not go over 40 MPH without running rough and the dealer was only about 10 miles away

 

Mine is a 2019 just crossed 16,000 miles this week. No issues so far. I have had it on several long trips and would not hesitate to take it on the next one. Any vehicle can break down at any time. No point living in fear.

I have driven all over since the recall, including a ~4000 mile road trip to Florida. All you can do is drive it and hope for the best.

I remember reading about @ipnpulz having his fail. That's the only one I've read about.

EDIT: for reference, I bought my 2019 in January of 2019 new and have about 53K miles on it.

 

Wow you get around.

My 18' just turned over 16K miles. So far I've had no issues other than the dealership stripping a couple of skid plate bolt holes at my last "free" oil change.

I wasn't trying to be a Debbie downer with this thread, I just wanted to hear how everyone was doing with regards to the recall.

Yes, I do! I also have a work vehicle. I've been averaging 35-40K miles per year combined.

No worries about being a downer. It's good to bring these things up in case anyone else has experienced a failure, or if someone isn't aware of the recall.

I know I would like to hear about any other failures.

I guess it's a good thing it didn't happen when you were on a road trip.

That's a better answer than I could have guessed. Kudos to you for taking care of family! It's the most important thing in life.


I love Florida and look forward to spending more time down there eventually.
