I upgraded my ORP's tires and wheels to the 17x7 TRD Pro wheels with 275/70/17 BFG KO's, should I also get a matching size spare tire? I was going to get a cheaper tire to save some $ since it's the spare. Will it fit in the spare tire well ?
    thx,
    Tom

It will definitely fit. I made the mistake of only buying 4 SCS ray tens on my wife's and wish I would have bought a fifth now.

look in their blemished wheels thread. They sale singles that have minor cosmetic flaws for cheaper. That’s how I got my spare.

    Tom, FYI

Having different tire sizes on four wheel drive vehicles can do damage to the vehicle. Since tires vary from brand to brand, and even from model to model, damage can even occur with tires of the same size if they have a large enough difference in circumference.

Makes sense ensuring that the spare matches the tires.

Question, since our 4Runners have open differentials, wouldn't a smaller diameter tire be ok at least for a shorter range?

Similar to a vehicle in a turn.

I would think so as well. I am currently waiting for my full size spare, so a size small will have to do if I get a flat between now and then. Like you mentioned, I wouldn't drive far. But, it could get you to a shop or something.

You should get a matching 275 spare tire. You can definitely get something cheaper. The General's tread pattern looks similar too.

However, if you did get a fifth KO2 you'd always have an immediately accessible matching tire in case you punctured a sidewall or something on one of the other four. Any tire shop could swap the KO2 from your spare wheel to your TRD wheel and you would't have to worry about availability/inventory issues.

I run a 5th and include in rotations
If any tire gets damage the spare has no more or less than 5,000 difference in tread depth

If you want to, sure. But you don't have to. The size difference is small.
