18.5 gallons (supposedly) is a large fuel tank, but I would like to get even more range from my vehicle. I go on average 250 miles on a single tank, but the absolute most I have managed to get was 300 miles (21.4 mpg not bad). I would like to go to remote places having more fuel would be nice.

Does anyone know if its possible to fit an additional tank under the car?

If you have any experience please let me know.

4Runners have a sealed evap system. I would assume that makes things fairly difficult to make any mods to.

You might be better off getting a Jerry Can or something like a Rotopax 2 gallon storage (x2, 3 ..whatever you need).

I think it could be done but, it’s a lot of work and coins.
Are there smog laws in your state?
Are you trying to not have gas cans on the roof rack or rear bumper?

My 86 F150 XLT 4WD Lariat 8-foot bed does. Takes up a lot of room under there.... It just turned 200k miles and runs like brand new...You would have to install a switching mechanism...

Reminds me of my Pops old diesel rig. It had a pair of twenty somethings from the factory and he added a behind the cab(in the bed)75 gal. If I remember correctly he had a 1,500 mile range when pulling his trailer. Not bad.

86 was the first year of fuel injection I believe. It was a great advance in technology..

FI has been around since the 50's. As was the case for years, and years, it took Detroit a VERY long time to catch up.

Ford had CFI from at least 1984 I believe but SEFI made its way into the Mustangs in 86...so yeah...maybe the same year for Trucks.

    Look here too.

Thinking it through. I believe this system has more pluses than minuses. My major concern would be a high impact rear collision(think traffic accident). That said, and if that's a concern? Limit their use to an as needed basis. For those who moved to a swing out tire carrier and want to keep center of gravity as low as possible, it's a great fit. imo Also, if running 3 of them causes concern about potential trail damage? It wouldn't take much to fashion a base shield for the lowest container. All in all, I'm liking the concept.

It can definitely be done and from my understanding it’s around the price of a really well built suspension system including install. I think I saw someone had it done for around 7k installed.

The question is more the investment over outcome and longevity of the truck as well as longevity of ownership. Mods like these need to have a break even point in my opinion. Will you venture far enough out often enough to have paid for the tank in the long run? Or will a fuel Jerry cans or rotopax be enough at a fraction of the cost ?

I saw post 5 but that doesn’t include installation and fabrication to be able to make that work for 3rd gens. That’s a system for 5th gens that you quoted. It may work but it will still need to be Made to work.

Still hoping LRA will make a larger capacity “stock” fuel tank where it mounts in the stock location. I’m loving the added 14 gals of water in the spare tire void and to me having that extra water makes camping/showering a game changer.
Had I seen the LRA tanks earlier in the built I may have went with that option, not sure though. Until then, a 3gal Rotopax will suffice.B0664DB9-343B-4C53-9319-7B0B43507A56.jpg 2E69460E-839F-42EF-8C10-DA0E79339278.jpg 5E7C6B04-BBCA-462B-A94B-5A318545E5E2.jpg

That is cool. I mainly wanted more fuel capacity because the 3rd gen doesn't have great range. Its fine but not the best, the most I got was 304 miles and the needle was on empty yet the gas light hadn't yet come on.

Any specs details on this? We were thinking the same for water travels
