Looking to buy a used 4 Runner. I need an SR5 or Limited due to the 3rd row seat. I think a moderate lift really improves the look of the truck. I don't know much about lift kits. What should I be aware of on a used truck with a lift kit already installed? Should I buy a stock truck and have it lifted myself? Thoughts. Totally new to 4 runners and lift kits.

I would get it stock, unless you can tell it was taken care of and not beaten to death on a trail or just running through mud puddles. Look up the difference between spacers and an actual suspension lift and decide what’ll fit your needs.
spacers - practical for little to no off-road, will not improve ride.
Suspension lift - ideal for on road and off-road use, improves handling, ride, and “nose dive”.

Take your time and do your research. There has become tons of aftermarket parts for these vehicles and it can become daunting. 99% of people are perfect with what a stock vehicle offers. Only considering slight offroad but really want new suspension, go Bilstein route. Many options, but few are actually needed.

    Cheers and keep asking questions!!

Thanks. This truck will be 90% on road. I think a spacer would suffice.

If mostly on-road then yes, a spacer will more than solve the stance issue. I enjoy the occasional trips offroading and found a great deal on TRD pro suspension. I installed it and really helps with the nose dive of the stock suspension. I know this will handle what I'm willing to throw at it!

In my case the spacer lift on my SR5 improved the ride. It gave less nose dive and body roll. On the down side the wheel articulation was less. I did like the ride on trails after spacer lift but prefer the softness of stock ride on local roads.

For sure for the most part buying stock would be a good option but sometime people lift and take real good care of them. For example My Limited is lifted but more of an on road vehicle. Its just lift for the looks. To me Limited has the worst stance among 4Runner line-up (just my personal feeling about my Limited).

Yep, this will be my daily commuter with occasional recreational use (camping, hunting fishing ect.) not likely to see any seriously rough terrain. Mostly gravel and dirt roads. Just think a lift really improves the look of the truck.
