    My 1999 4-Runner got a new windshield and the installers keep mounting the rear view mirror on to the glass incorrectly. First time, it was not centered horizontally and the driver sun visor would hit it due to overlapping 1 1/2 inches. Second time, it was too low and I had to hunch down in my seat to use it. Where can I obtain an official specification that tells the exact spot where the rear-view mirror should be glued onto the windshield? Please help!!! When the installers were heat gun removing the mirror the second time, it damaged the glass and they had to install another mirror. i wouldn't let them 'wing it' and glue the rear view mirror on a 3rd time.

    man this is a hard one.

    I would suggest pulling both sun visors down.

    Then have someone hold the mirror, centered between both sun visors... then see if that works. Once you have a spot you like, note the spot with a marker or some tape and have it installed there... :notsure:

    I did do some of that with the latest attempt (the one that resulted in a second new windshield needing to be installed), but the install was being done at my work office and the installer didnt have a tape measure or marker with him. After all I had experienced, I didn't want to 'try' again, and have any doubt about it's location. Now, in addition to posting on this Forum, I have sent an email inquiry to Toyota. I am surprized that obtaining a placement spec seems to be so challenging. I have gone to 2 Toyota dealerships... I am also looking for a 1999 Toyota 4-Runner that I can take measurements of myself. When the last installer was with me, we tried holding the mirror
    up, but it is a challenge determining placement where it is doesn't get touched by a visor, plus he didn't have a marker, and without marking and then placing... nope...:) Today I will go by a competitor windshield installer and see if they can help me obtain a spec.

    Or find someone with the same 4Runner and ask them if you get a measurement. You could even go to a used car dealership and pretend to be interested and measure while you are there.:thumbsup:

    Yep... the two Toyota delerships also have used cars and I looked around. I will add looking at all used car places... good idea. Maybe I can trade mine for one that has the mirror mounted ! ha ha ha! Mine is a 99 with only 70,000 miles... doubt I could find one that I like as much! I will travel with tape measure in hand. Thanks !

    let me ask you this.

    are you sure that the visors wouldn't rub the mirror originally?

    My visors rub the mirror and I have never replaced the windshield

    This is why I want the spec. I want the mirror put right where it was prior to the new windshield, so there is no question. What I do know is that it does't belong in either if the places that the new windshield installers put it either of the 2 times. The first time. the visor wouldn't go down at all, due to obstruction/overlap of thr mirror by about 1 1/2 inches. The second install there wasn't any overlap because the mirror was mounted so low that I had to scrunch my head down to use it. Toyota responded to my question to them, with the following... I will be sending my VIN... I am the original owner of my 1999 Limited 4-Runner... this is the first replacement windshield... no modifications... I am determinded to get the spec and get to the bottom of this! Computers and databases and stored information (specs) did indeed exist in 1999! :)

    Toyota responded with the following:

    "Per our records, the review mirror on the 1999 4Runner screws into the overhead console. IF you may forward your VIN, we can further research this for you.

    If we may be of further assistance, please contact us via email or by calling 800-331-4331. We are available from 5 AM to 6 PM, Pacific Time, Monday through Friday, and from 7 AM to 4 PM Saturday."
