Cons to not having KDSS?

Discussion in '5th Gen 4Runners (2010-2024)' started by Baby_Silverback, Feb 6, 2021.

?

Is this something that should bother me as much as it does.

  1. Yea dude. KDSS is life.

  2. KDSS isn't that big of a deal. You're better off without her.

  3. You're an idiot.

I the BMW world, everyone must complete training on each of the various models offered. It doesn't make you an expert but at least you're familiar with the major features. I do feel like the Toyota sales people just have too many different models and configurations to keep straight. When I was researching Runners, I was shocked by all that was offered.

Glad I did my homework before walking the lot.

I have a lot of experience with KDSS. The 2016 Murano was a pile (cvt) and on its last leg. So we got her a 2020 nautical blue ORP without KDSS, fast forward to December 2020 and my 2019 Tacoma was losing a bearing or the auto tensioner.

I was just under 36k and needed to use the 2020 ORP to go back and forth to work so I didn’t go over 36k, and we were having kid #2 also. I loved the 4Runner way more than the 3.5 Tacoma. So much more that I bought a 2021 ORP super White.

the 2021 has KDSS and I didn’t know it until I looked at the sticker at work a few days into ownership, however I did notice it drove a lot different than the wife’s. Basically it’s night and day difference, I drive both hers and mine on a consistent basis. Knowing what KDSS feels like I would actively look for another if I needed to buy a new 4Runner.

just my opinion, I love it. Feels like a different truck.

I was hoping for a 2" to 3" lift at the rear and front with some 33s. According to Accutune the highest lift for 4runner with KDSS us 1". Does that sound correct? Here's the link to Accutune: https://accutuneoffroad.com/kdss-suspension-tech/

We plan to start exploring local trails first, followed by week long excursions as time permits, all in preparation for the Continental Divide and Trans American Trail. Since I'll be travelling with my wife and kids, I don't have plan to do any difficult trails, just mild to moderate. With that said, I also want the rig to be more than capable for moderate.

Accutune knows their stuff. They also know how to achieve higher lift with KDSS. I believe 2.5" front and 1" rear lift is generally fine according to their website.

There are plenty of folks with KDSS with more than 1" rear lift. I have heard of up to 3" without other modifications, which is about as high as you want to go before dropping the front differential. I am at 2.3" front and 1.5" rear and fit 33.5" tires fine. I have 50K miles (20K on lift) and have done lot of mild and some moderate trails without any trouble. This is only my experience, so use your own judgement.

For mild to moderate trails, you might only need good tires and maybe armor if you're going to be in the rocks. I would be more concerned with recovery gear and armor than a lift and tires.

But, a smaller lift is fine if you still want it. You really only need a big lift for truly hardcore stuff, at which point you may need to modify or remove the sway bars.

FYI, there is no need to mess with the valves on the KDSS to lift your 4runner. It seems that the best method is to leave it alone unless it becomes necessary after the lift is completed.

If you have more questions, @AccuTune Offroad is always willing to answer, and they can help you figure out what's best for your needs. I only know my experience and what I've heard here, but those guys deal with this stuff every day.

Thanks. With the KDSS Drop Bracket, you can fit a longer travel shock in the rear. This will help you get more lift height in the rear without too much trouble.

Thank you Accutune. As always you provide very good info. (Love that KDSS video you did.) Mind if I ask another question?

Does this KDSS drop bracket to the same thing as people using after market track bar to solve track bar hitting sway bar issue?

There are some unique track bars on the market that are designed to help clear the KDSS links, yes. However they do not solve the limited droop issue. With fancy track bar, you would still be limited at full droop from the fixed side of KDSS links. When you use the KDSS drop bracket, it will not only allow more droop, but keep the track bar from hitting anything. Solves 2 issues.
