2010-19 vs. 2020-21 MPGs

2020 orp bumper, winch, battery fridge , 285/70/17 ridge grapplers, 2.75 lift, 15-16 mpg city. I was getting 13.5 consistently until my wife did her own experiment and tried gas from a local place three or 4 tanks.

 

I actually used the last tank to see how good of gas mileage I could get. I have a 2018 SR5 4wd and my only mod is stock size KO2's. Tried to never go over 2k rpm's and no faster than 70mph. Just pulled in from work and got 19.3. lol Not sure all the slow driving is worth it. Damn it was boring.

 

Yeah I'm guilty of being the slowest driver in MA. I 'm usually going 60mph on the highway and feathering the gas all the time. I guess thats the secret to my record setting gas mileage?

 

Yeah, 23mpg on highway trips was doable for me too. I once got a little over 24, was coming back from upstate NY and had perfect conditions. No wind, no traffic, didn't need AC. Got home with 435miles on the trip odo, and 65 miles DTE showing.

 

I was expecting a slight drop, maybe .5-1 mpg, but not closer to 3. The ATX is 44lbs, I believe the stock Duelers are 41lbs, so not even that much diff in rotational weight. The tread is much more aggressive though, perhaps the rolling resistance is that much higher. Also, though they are the same size on the sidewall, the ATX is noticeably larger, it looks like I went up one size compared to stock. I actually checked the sidewall to make sure they didn't put 275's on it when I picked it up.

Also, I think that because these are so underpowered/under geared, the extra rolling resistance is enough to cause more frequent downshifts, and me to be heavier on the throttle.

Not losing a lot of mpg was my main reason for going for stock size P rated tires when everyone says go LT and upsize. I really wanted 255/80/17, but was scared of the 50lb weight. Jokes on me though, since I took a big hit on mileage anyway.

 

Man, you all are getting much better MPG's than me. Just filled up again and calculated 12.1! Now, I only have 3000 miles on it and ts winter but my God... Might as well have bought a v8 Tundra. I love the 4Runner though... Maybe it will get a better in the summer and after it breaks in a bit more. Portland OR is pretty hilly, not many flat streets at all.

 

I wonder how much more do the Duratrac's weigh than the stock tires.. I can't remember what they were

 

Yes I can see where cruising at 60 would give you 23 mpg. I think my best is a little over 20 but that would be at a higher cruise speed plus I have a roof rack and those really hurt fuel economy. I often average around 18.5 in mixed driving and I feel pretty good about anything over 18.
