Lifting OffRoad Premium with KDSs

Hi all newbie with a lot to learn. I live in Colorado, serious mountain biker but new to off roading. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new TRD Pro, but test drove it against a new OffRoad Premium (ORP) with KDSS (stock suspension and tires). The ride on the highway was smoother on the ORP. So I am pulling the trigger on it, and plan to make after market mods. I will upgrade wheels and tires (Falken Wildpeak M/T?). But where I get confused is with the shocks and lift. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but I am still trying to get it all straight. What I can’t seem to get clear on in reading through various threads is if the Bilstein suspension/lift setup on the TRD Pro would be compatible with KDSS as an aftermarket mod, or even desirable. And, if not how best to proceed ?

Yes you can lift a KDSS Runner. Not much different than lifting one that does not have KDSS. About the max lift you want to go with either is 3". Pretty much the same kits work for both. How much do you want to spend? What are you going to use it for?

I have a Toytec Ultimate on my ORP with KDSS. Works just fine.

 

Look is awesome! Appreciate responses. As for my plans/uses, mostly green Laning and perhaps some rock crawling as my skills develop. Becoming more inteteted in the BFG AT KO2’s. 4x4 runner, what load capacity are those and how do they feel on pavement? Also,wondering how much lift the 285s require. On interesting thing.

 

I just got the king lift kit especially for the 4runner with kdss. It rides amazing. Ive had Fox dsc coilovers , toytec boss, icon stage 3. But none ride remotely close to the king setup with Total chaos UCA's Running 285/70 17 Toyo MT's. Ive ran every tire worth mentioning on my 2011 taco, 2013 rubicon, 2016 taco and nothing is as tough as toyo and as quiet on road as a toyo Mud tire. DO you pay a lot for it? YES it is worth it YES. SHarp rocks , broken bottles running through branches and anything you can throw at it. I could never even manage to get a slow leak. My 2 cents.

 

I'm looking into a lift for my '18 T4R TRD OR Premium. Any links to your King kit? And how much would it cost to have someone install it (im in no position to do that myself), and if it would void any warranties. Thanks for the info, looks friggin sweet.

It shouldnt void any warranty. Your rig will ride better than stock. I have kdss and thought the ride would be too stiff, its not at all. comfortable and solid.
The Labor will run around 800 to 1k.

 

I installed the Bilstein 6112/5160 lift (2 1/2-1.0) and love it. I might replace the rear coils to compensate for the RIGd UltraSwing tire carrier, but that decision has been made yet.

 

Talk to a shop like Toytec or RSG Offroad they knows how to lift KDSS without KDSS lean or any other issues. Discuss about the size of tires you want to run, weight you want to carry, the budget you are looking at. I have installed $400 (parts only) spacer lift to $4200+ (parts only) ELKA lift for non KDSS 4Runners. These shops will have lot of options. At least Toytec explains me why one option is better than the other, etc..


If you don't have winter tires or work from home during snowy days I don't think M/Ts are a good option for Colorado. All terrain tires with 3 peak mountain snow flake ratings would be good for driving on i70 in Winter. But still they are no match for a "All Weather" tire or "Winter" tire, you just have to drive carefully with plenty on gap.

 

Those OME are insane. I was so confident on abusing them on trails and also amazing on curvy mountain roads. The only reason I changed them is because I wanted little more on road comfort.
