Currently driving a 2017 Tacoma SR5 crew cab 4WD but wanting to upgrade to a newer 4Runner. Considering a 2020 SR5 Premium 4WD or TRD Off Road Premium. Each model has a feature or two that I like over the other making it a toss up so far.
I’m retired and do a fair amount of driving, about 30K/Yr pulling a small utility trailer with my kayak and all my gear, approx 700 lbs plus trailer and most trips highway 2-3 hrs.
    What I’m weighing:
    TRD OR
    a) Seats lay down completely flat
    b) Black Badging

    SR5
    a) Two tone seat covers and stitching
    b) Slightly lower purchase price

    Other Considerations,
TRD OR - Locker, Crawl Control, multi terrain (Not needed but probably nice insurance and better for resale)
TRD OR - KDSS (Worth the $ and reliable long term)

Pull out Cargo tray (Can’t find much info or any photos on this)

    New or Previously owned?
Was considering buying a previously owned (15k or less) model but doesn’t look like I’d save much $.

What am I missing and or other Considerations?

It’ll be really what you see yourself using. I’ve been in some scenarios whwre my SR5 struggled through obstacles or parts of a trail, where if I had a locker it would’ve been a breeze. Everyone that has KDSS likes it, so there’s nothing negative about it. Pull out cargo tray, you can probably build yourself something better. And definitely buy new, unless you find a deal where you’re going to save over 5k but most “newer” used 4runners are shy of new 4runner prices.

if you’ll just be towing and driving and fairly paved roads, SR5 has my vote as it will suffice and leave room for potential mods. If you’ll be doing off-roading and trails, probably the off road.

Get the TRD ORP. You won’t regret it. I love mine. Looks better than an sr5 IMO.

Let me make the decision harder.

My wife doesn't like to drive TRD OR or SR5 in winter conditions. She loves the Limited. With its full time 4wd she like the fact that she can just drive without messing with anything.

Let me make it easier, I have a 2020 ORP I’ll be selling as soon as I buy a 3rd gen (hoping to see one tomorrow) no real mods, but t does have trd pro exhaust and I have a trd pro suspension with westcott design life assembled but not installed. Let me know if you’re interested!

I have an off-road premium w/ kdss and the predator package (black badging and 17" aluminum off-road wheels and tires). I love it.

I vote TRD OR. Even if you don't need the offroad stuff, it's nice to have and will prob increase resale.

If you're looking for under 15k miles, I wouldn't bother with used, price difference will probably be negligible. I bought mine used, but it was 6y/o with 79k on the clock. Made sense to me bc I wanted to stay under 25k.

i plan on looking at and driving both as soon as I can find one in my area. I’m really interested in the back cargo area with and without the pull out cargo tray and the KDSS.

luckily the wife won’t be driving the 4Runner often and we almost never have real winter weather here in north Texas.

Thanks, I know there’s a sweet spot with mileage on the new vs used debate. Since I drive about 27-30K/Yr I’m leaning towards slightly used.

yes, I don’t think either would be a wrong decision but I think one would be the best decision in
    the long run.

    All of them.
New with warranty for slightly more very slightly more vs used that you have no idea what the previous owner did or didn’t do with the used one. Even with only 15k on it doesn’t mean they didn’t romp the crap out of it from start to stop for those double coupon sales at the grocery store
