    Led swaps tundra brake upgrade
Hi guys just did the tundra caliper upgrade on my wife’s 2000 4Runner 4x4 limited. Had a problem with the booster being a Tacoma booster. Installed the correct one. And extended the throw of the booster just a bit. Calipers where sticking. One day the truck just started to shake violently in the front end. Driving down the highway, started around 40 with a real light vibration and turns into a baddd vibration jolting the car feeling like you popped a tire almost. It did this on two occasions the brakes smelled baddd so the calipers had to be sticking. Went to drive it to my dads garage to check it out. And the brakes just didn’t work pedal to the floor then it would stop after about a second of the pedal to the floor. Checked it out my mechanic checked the already brand new booster and it was bad. He installed a new one and it seemed to fix the problem just fine for about a week. Braked well no calipers sticking. All of a sudden it started to do the same thing shake violently in the front end around highway speeds. I’m am completely stumped. When I did the tundra upgrade installed new rotors, pads, ss brake lines, calipers, master cylinder and brake booster. Only thing I could think it could be is a bad calipers. They where cheapies from Amazon. But it confuses me because changing the booster seemed to fix the issue until a week went by and it started to do it again. Any ideas or idea on what it might be?

    Hello there!

Take your brake booster out and master cylinder. Let me know if there is a PAPER gasket in between there. If there is not, that is your issue. It is losing vacuum. The paper gasket is very thin and it needs to be in that shape. YUP I had the same issue.

so I do have a gasket there it doesn’t look like paper though. I should probably just order the OEM one.

I believe I figured it out. When I got my pads for the 2005 tundra they sent me 4 pad clips. I dont know why I didn’t check my Tacoma or look it up but I put 2 clips on each caliper. One on the top and one on the bottom of the pads of each caliper. I took off that bottom clip as that’s the OEM orientation. Fixed the problem. I think that it was just enough pressure to keep the pads applied every once in a while causing the jolting in the brakes. Along with my booster knob on the inside being adjusted just a little to far out. I adjusted that with a master cylinder adjustment tool and the pedal feel increased immensely. The pedal was not contacting the rod soon enough because it was to far adjusted out. This fixed the problem! The pedal still feels a little little soft so I’m going to try changing the paper gasket see if that helps. Thanks for the response bro!!!

So i got a OEM Gasket installed it does feel slightly better. I also changed the return spring the old one felt weak.
Should there be any play in the brake pedal when pushing it down with your hand until it feels like it engages with the booster rod? I got about a half inch of play i would say until it stops with light pressure. I have a picture of the booster rod coming into the cab. Does this adjustment do anything for the play of the pedal? And if so how do i go about adjusting it?
