I ordered this one from Amazon at this link Stant Locking Gas Cap
It is a Stant. I removed the old gas cap by gently prying out the retention cord. So I could always put it back.

The Stant cap works great on my 2021 4R and I did not get any computer faults.

I clicked on your link and Amazon says it doesn’t fit a 2021 4Runner. Thoughts?

The Stant 10504 is the one I purchased and it fit perfectly on my 2020 4R. Sometimes Amazon is behind on the years supported. So I would check and see if the 2021 4R has a different fuel cap size than the 2020 4R. I would be surprised if they were different, but check for yourself to be sure.

On my 2019 T4R, I've been using the Stant 10504 for the past 2 years. No issues to report.

That's actually a good idea. I've been wanting to do that myself.

My buddy in Portland OR just informed me that someone stole his catalytic converter off his Honda Pilot.

There's getting to be way too many bottom feeders in the world.

You can usually defeat a locking gas cap by pressing down hard on it.

I thought Toyota had a gas theft deterrent built into the filler neck which prevented a hose from being pushed down the tube. I thought that was the case on my 2014 Tacoma OR.
    Perhaps I'm mistaken??

My former 95’ Honda Civic did too. I discovered this when I had to replace the fuel pump and tried to siphon some gas out through the filler.

I am going to take this post back :(. I had the Duralast cap on for about 1000 miles on a MY21 ORP, no issues. Then the CELs for EVAP leak and gross leak. Anyway as the Toyota parts guy explains, the aftermarket locking gas caps have smaller seals and can cause issues on the T4R. I see that others have had success with the Stant locking caps.

I've just decided to go back to the OEM, single click gas cap.

I bought the Stant cap and it worked for less than a day before the CEL came on and required a trip to the dealer to reset..

As much as I wanted a locking cap, I’m sticking with the OEM cap and am disappointed there does not seem to be a reliable aftermarket solution…

    Cheers,
    Bob

Don't blame me, I voted for Trump.
I've had the stant cap on for the past 10 months no issues.

Thank you for the confirmation Bob. I am sticking with the OEM as well and will believe in the goodness of people :)

It was a more expensive lesson for me, made two two additional keys (minor) for the cap and then charged $170 at Tustin Toyota (Tustin/Irvine CA area) for the diagnosis and reset. My local dealership here tells me that it should have been done as a courtesy, despite the aftermarket gap. I suppose Tustin Toyota really needed the money.

Oh well, I was on a road trip and needed to make sure there were really no issues. Lesson learned.

    Ouch!!

That dealer really did rip you for the diagnostics. My dealer, Cobb County Toyota in Kennesaw, GA did a diagnostic check as a courtesy since my 4R is under warranty but shared that it is normally a $90 charge.

    Just some food for thought....

Just after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, I had someone try to open the fuel door on my 4th gen 4runner with a screwdriver to steal some fuel while we were helping remediate a home that had been flooded. Mangled the door and scratched the body pretty badly.

I would have much rather they had the ability to just open the door and steal the $30 worth of fuel in the tank than cause the $100s of dollars of damage they did.

Unless you are concerned about someone putting something bad in your tank, consider the value of what you are protecting and the cost to you if they really want to get to it.

If someone wants to steal your gas, they will just punch a hole in your tank and drain it from there.

I read in a forum that 4Runners have some sort of anti-siphoning mechanism in the filler tube. There are several posts from people who tried to stick a siphon tube into the tank and couldn’t, or got one in part way, got it stuck and couldn’t remove it.

Interesting the Stant cap works well for some but throws a code quickly for others.

Maybe inconsistent quality since the issue seems to be with how well it deals..

@TrueTexas Such a great point and one I haven't thought of. I have been searching high and low for a lockable solution. I had bought a lockable cap from autozone and it immediately gave me error about the cap. After reading your brilliant comment, my search ends now. Rather they take it than damage.

Tried one of the 2 Stant locking gas caps that O'Reilly says is compatible with my 2022 4R, but I soon got 2 error codes, one for fuel system and another saying there was an issue with the front wheel transmission components!
The dealer said what everyone knows, Toyota doesn't make or recommend a locking cap. So back to the original cap that I had to dig out of the dumpster!

I'm thinking of designing some kind of internal latch system to deter casual thieves and vandals. I know I'm more likely to get struck by lightning than have my gas siphoned from the filler tube, but when gas hits $7/gal, lightning is going to strike. If anyone has clever ideas, let me know. Maybe a magnetic latch that you have to hold a magnet to get a latch inside the door to open? Or maybe the locking door mechanism from another model could be adapted?

This is the Stant locking gas cap that gave me error codes:

I’ve been using a Stant locking gascap for 3 months with no issues. I believe it’s all about the seal of the rubber gasket. I lubed mine with a little smear of silicone grease.

I read an article where some idiot here tried drilling a whole in the tank to drain gas and it started a fire and he got burned. Brilliant idea. Now he will probably sue the owner of the vehicle for negligence.
