Most current SD chip for navigation?

Does any body know what is the most current SD drive for navigation? Is it 2019 or is there a 2020. I know nav sucks but having an outdated one (2015-2016) sucks even worse. I see chips going on eBay for about $40 which is much cheaper then dealer. Any help would be appreciated.

 

October 2019 was the latest Toyota release.

What do you do to upgrade the nav? Is it covered for a 2018 under warranty. Well let me re-phrase actually not upgrade but rather update to the latest version.

Just curious. Is anyone aware of any 3rd party nav maps that would have topo info in addition to the streets?

 

Gaia GPS app. You get it with or without a subscription. I’ve used it a couple times and it’s good enough. No subscription

 

40 bucks they are old not new. oct 2019 then the data is a year old perhaps oct2018 data..
my july2016 runner has a may 2015 chip which was with 2014 data. in North Carolina on rt74 the road disappears then 5 miles later comes back. cell phone works if its not with the proper software data..

Good question, possible with the 2020 update of android auto/carplay or replacing the head unit. Most run Gaia separately on a tablet. There's a SD card you replace in the stock radio to upgrade factory nav routes. It's under a button that actually pulls off. My local dealer quoted me $80 for the updated card.

Thanks for the advice guys! I took a risk and bought a 2019 sd for $40. Guess we will see what happens. I am assuming 2019 is better then late 2015 lol

 

Let us know how that goes. My '14 could stand to be updated but I'm hesitant with new software not knowing how it interacts with a unit the age of mine.

I'm sure it's probably fine. I'm just gun-shy after updating my son's Cherokee Trailhawk (I know, completely different platform altogether). I had to attempt it no less than 20x over 2 days then it finally took and installed.

 

Try another dealer, it's a shame the prices aren't standard across the board.

 

You posted your dealership is $80 for the SD card . give us the dealership name so we can get a good deal...I will call them if it works out..

 

Hey guys received the chip in the mail. Easy to install just popped it in and it started to update. Unfortunately what was advertised as latest 2019 update turned out to 2018 maps. Still for 35 bucks I can’t complain, mine was 2015. Most important is I don’t live in the middle of a field anymore and other major street changes are updated.

 

Anyone know some nerdy details of these cards? Are they MSDOS or FAT? Can new maps just be dragged and dropped from a friends newer 4runner onto my SD card? Has anyone uploaded these files to mega?

 

The card is readable as a FAT 32 device, but the maps are in a proprietary format. I'd love to be able to use real topographic map overlays for off highway sections. The Entune GPS sucks.

And while I'm on my soapbox, one of my favorite peeves with the 4Runner's infotainment system is that it doesn't make good use of GPS. I get far more GPS functionality on my smart phone or Garmin unit, so why can't that be included in the Entune unit? Additionally, it would be great to OBD II connectivity and data with the head unit for both diagnostics and additional data.

 

Yeah man agreed. I honestly don't use the entune GPS very much. If I need it I use Google maps on the fly. Toyota should have integrated with Google maps much earlier on. I guess I just expected that a vehicle that lasts a long time would have GPS updated for at least a decade. It's the principle even though I don't use it very much.

toyota format on the sd card tricky .. some hacked it ... then some sell it in secret sales.. yes the toyota road maps are over a year old.. use the cell phone if your on new roads and different exit #'s .. In North Carolina I had the road disappear then a few miles the road came back... wife turned on cell phone road map worked perfectly..

 

Just installed the Amazon mini SD card #86271-OEO72...In my 2015. Cost $44, loaded right up so far seems a better version then original. Find out on my next road trip!
