I took my 2018 4Runner into the Toyota dealership last week to get running boards installed cos i like the look of them on the 4Runners. Im an idiot and didn't think to ask more questions before buying them there and having them installed as all other running boards ive ever seen are usually tucked up either super close to the door or pretty close.

When I picked up my car i was surprised that the running boards were so low. I brought it back in the next day and asked them if they were adjustable. One of the employees was like "man those are low" lol but the main service boss said theyre not adjustable, thats the size and its not refundable lol.

So I'm kinda screwed now cos i really hate the height of them. Its not even close to be tight/tucked in higher up with the door.

Im wondering -- does anyone know if there is any way to adjust the height on these? Toyota kinda brushed me off so i wanted to double check.

If not, I'm wondering if i should try and sell them on Craigslist for a loss and get the kind of running boards that ill be happy with.

Do you have a receipt of what you paid for?

Those are not the factory running boards.

Im sure I could find it somewhere. I did it all through the official Toyota Dealership. I bought the running boards from them and had them installed there too.

Well those are not the standard boards so tell um to take it off for free unless you bought those for some reason.

They don't even look like they match a 5th gen.

I don't know why you're being told those aren't factory. They're on every Limited I've ever seen, including mine. They were installed at Toyota the day I bought mine. That said, it seems they are not installed properly.

you just need new brackets where the running board attach to the car , 6 shorter brackets of them they should come in pack i have no part number but if you go back to the dealer and ask if they sell them separately or just look on the market place on this forum or craigslist
you can go back and look on the dealers lot to see if you do NOT see another 4runner with those running board on then make stink about it and they will change it for you sorry to say you got be a D[(k sometimes because they are if you used your credit card use them to help you good luck
Here are mine that I picked up from forum market place
look at the picture all you need is those brackets this guy is selling the running boards on our market place i think there are Four different style of running boards that came on the 4runner

Wow, that is a really bad dealership, more like a stealer ship. You should definitely ask for your money back.

Buy steps of your choice and do it your self. Just 6 bolts each side. Running boards should come with their own bolts plus the 4Runner without running boards have the bolts in the bolt holes.
In my case when I bought my own running boards I remove the bolts on my 4Runner body and used the bolts came with the running boards. (I used Aries - 2061027 AeroTread5" Running Boards w/Brackets)

    @kwiles24
here you go man i found this online parts
this what you got but with longer brackets all they have to do is change the brackets

i don't know if this bracket will do the job because there is no picture google the part # probably can get a cheaper too
**They used the Running board brackets for Limited package those idiots that is why there is gap Limited has different side moldings - rocker panels LOL not at you thats why most of us on the forum do NOT uses the dealer for anything!

those look like limited running boards, but you have a sr5. limited running boards hang lower as they have lower rocker panels.

They definitely sold you running boards for the Limited. This was the dealers error. I would complain and make them fix it. Don’t spend another cent to correct it yourself. I had the same problem when I ordered the nightshade running boards, because I didn’t want the silver strip on mine. They came with the longer brackets. It was my fault, but I had to order the shorter brackets to fix it.

Problem is he doesn't have a limited.

And they got the wrong brackets.

There has to be another 4R on the lot they can compare to and see they fucked up. Not even sure why OP had to buy after the fact unless its used and the original owner took them off.

Wow just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. Im clueless when it comes to car so all this is suuuuuuper helpful. My takeaway is this is probably fixable with getting new brackets that were sent above but I'm going to take it into the dealership again (third time! ugh) and tell them i think they gave me the Limited running boards when I dont have the limited and try and get them to correct it. If not, ill report back.

    Again, thanks a ton!

    Man thank you so much.

How hard is it to replace the brackets? This is coming from someone who doesnt even change his own oil or anything (lol, i know).

Everything these guys said. Those were meant to mount on a Limited due to the rocker panels hanging lower on a Limited. Tell the dealership you want them mounted correctly. It may just be changing out the brackets. Do not spend any more $$ fixing their screwup. Anyone looking at those would know they look ridiculous and are not meant for your vehicle.

No worries Man Not that hard at all its only 6 bolts per side thats it, the dealer should be able to do it for no charge in 1/2 hour max just be firm and direct with them and tell them if they don't fix it call your credit card company right in front them and say to take them off because they are the wrong part good luck man you can do this.

Update: I called the dealership and cited all the above info you guys gave me and they looked into it more (got a better employee who didn't brush me off) and ended up finding out and admitting they put on the Limited's onto my SR5. Theyre now going to swap them out and re-install for free.

Super appreciate all your guys help! Huge.

Customer walks in and says "I want running boards." And the rep says "they start at $X and go to $Z" customer says "give me $X". Toyota rep gives X. The issue that car enthusiasts is we assume that everyone who works at the dealership/distributor/parts store/etc is also one. When in all likelihood, they are not. I'd bet more are there to collect a paycheck than they are about the vehicle. They simply plug in the VIN, check what the computer spits out and read it to the customer. The customer makes the decision and the rep collects the payment.

Bull shit if the parts guy can't tell what model it goes on from their computer. If he didn't notice hes a lazy ass and it is still the dealers problem.

Letting a customer buy the incorrect part isn't the customers fault. Unless they insist on that one for some reason or not.
