Is it common for the back end to wiggle

It feels like my 4runner is wiggling when i go over bumps just got it, not sure if its a common thing or just a problem. Please some advice, just got it used from a dealer, dealer gave me no history of the vehicle its a 2015 , with 90000km

 

Welcome to the forum, i would take a look at the suspension.

 

No wiggle here, either pre- or post-lift.

 

Could be weak shocks; or panhard/track bar bushing starting to go; or rear control arm bushing starting to go.

First thing I would do is jounce the back up and down and see how the shocks are performing; if that looks good, next I would ask a friend to try and rock it back and forth, side to side, and up/down, while you look for play in the bushings. Should be able to identify the culprit by witnessing excessive play in the joint.

 

Afterthought to my above post... could also just be a loose bolt in the rear suspension somewhere too. I would also go through all of them and ensure they're good and tight. One final thought... if it's lifted in the rear, could also just be a bound up bushing. So if everything else checks out, last thing I would do is loosen all the bushing bolts (control arms and panhard/track bar); give the 4runner a good shake/jostle; then making sure it's on the ground (not jacked up or on a lift), re-torque all the bolts.

 

Funny, my new 2019 Pro (purchased in March 2020) exhibits the same thing, has done so since purchased. Sorta like a weird wobble when hitting a bump/pothole. Did it with OE tires/rims as well as with my new 305/50R20's.

 

Life (solid) axle dynamics completely normal. Be aware of trailer sway when towing since 4Runner's rear geometry is not best suited for heavy or poorly weight distributed trailer.

 

Yeah I think it "wiggles" a little from the factory. Completely stock mine seems to "pop" off of bumps in the rear, which, if nothing else, means that the weight of the truck flies up then squats down and around in different areas as I am turning, etc. I just take that as the "this thing is a truck and is supposed to drive / handle / feel like crap so whatever" thing.

 

A question about the road surface. Is it a speed bump or a bump at road speed?
A slow speed parking lot bump will make any tire side wall flex and feel like a wiggle no matter what vehicle
drives over it.
If you’ve ever ridden motorcycles on a concrete freeway that has the rain grooves cut into its surface, the bike wiggles.
From my own experience with enduros on the freeway, it wiggles and that is normal.
Another factor is the type of tread you have. If it’s a highway type tread with longitudinal grooves, it has less lateral stability. If it’s a A/T type with more cross grooves, it will have better lateral stability.
And of course lower than normal tire air pressure is a factor in lateral stability.

And with a 6 yr. old, 90k km. truck, it just might be the worn out bushings.

 

It's funny because I was thinking the same thing . I came from driving a 2009 Highlander with 218 k miles and it was rock solid , sturdy in turns and any terrain. Can't wait to put a lift .
