Thanks to the excellent info on this forum, my 2021 4Runner ORP is now sporting a new set of Falken Wildpeak A/T3 tires in 275/70 R17. The truck is stock without any lift. The only additions are the TRD skid plate and Toyota rock rails.

The tire size fitment said that 275 would not rub, but I was a bit nervous because these tires run a tad big. That said, they fit, with no rubbing at full wheel articulation. I didn't measure the clearance, but its probably around 1" at full wheel turn to the nearest wheel well/fender location.

Initial impressions: cornering is more controlled due to the firmer side walls; road noise is about the same as the stock tires (but I haven't tested them on the highway yet); and they look a lot better than the OEM Dunlops.

Overall, the tires seem great. Looking forward to doing my first ever off-roading this Spring. This is my first 4Runner, first 4wd and it is fantastic.

Attached is a comparison of the Dunlops vs the Wildpeaks on my truck. I've seen pictures of the 275's on the TRD Pro wheels, but not on the OEM rims. Hopefully this might help someone weighing the same tire decision.

    Looks great!

I'm of the opinion the 4Runner should have come wit this tire size stock.

By how much does this throw off the speedometer?

It gets it closer to being accurate. Your speedo is off using the stock sized tires.

    285's make it dead on.

I had read that it does correct the speedometer to being more accurate. Based on at 65mph you are going 1.1mph faster than what the speedometer used to say.

Its a good tire size even when lifted. My buddy got these after his 3in lift and still looks good.

Its nice that Wildpeaks are in Load C which is the middle level vs many other tires only have in E load which is excellent offroad but very firm ride on road.

I'm looking for the same size 275/70 r17 A/Ts. I'm looking for SL load for my Limited as its our city car. The softest I can find are those Wildpeaks Load C. Others are Load E. I'd probably buy the same.

Those look great, thanks for the comparison photos. I would have gone with that size also, but the 57.1 # tire weight steered me away.

    Falkens are HEAVY!

I don't even know how they make them that heavy.

I know, right? I know the P265 AT3s are a tad heavier than other brands, 46#, I believe, but I could live with that. 57#, not so much.

Any larger photos by chance? I'm also curious to see those Toyota Rock Rails.

Enjoy! I'm rocking the same tires.

Yes, they're heavy. They killed my gas mileage.. I'm at about 16.5 on the highway now.

I like mine a lot but it was a pain in the ass getting them balanced. And even still, every once in a while they'll (barely) wobble for a mile or so if the road irks them just right...

I hope you end up with no rubbing at all. When my shop installed mine, they also checked for "full wheel articulation" by having me turn the steering wheel while they checked clearance. They told me that there was one tiny area that *might* rub, based upon that test. Well, the problem with that is that we were on perfectly level ground inside their garage. Once you start taking off-camber, tight turns, you might find out what I mean. ;) BUT, the rubbing is NBD. I simply trimmed a small (hidden) piece of my bumper which took care of most of it (that was actually more of a "grab" than a "rub" lol as the tire tread would pull down, or up, on the edge of the bumper as it spun/rolled). I still rub on my mudflap behind the tire, and my fender liner in front of the tire, but only in certain situations so it's easy for me to mitigate with careful steering, or a 3 point turn situation. Eventually I'll remedy that slight rub but I've got some other irons in the fire currently.

In hindsight I may have gone with the C load 285 K02 as it's just barely bigger, but also lighter.. however the one thing I do not want to do to my truck right now is a BMC/Body Mount Chop/Cut my brand new trucks frame and weld on my own plate, no matter how many people say it's "nothing" lol.. to each his own of course (I'm sure it poses no real threat).

    What wheels are you running?

If they're aftermarket, what is the offset?

They are the stock 2021 TRD Offroad Premium wheels. I don't know their specs other than they are 7.5" in width instead of the 7.0" of the TRD Pro wheels.

I was planning on new Goodyears tomorrow and locally no one has specs for a 2021 alignment. I put on 1/2” spacers. So I canceled. Did you happen to have it aligned?

I'm running the grey/gunmetal "TRD Pro" wheels that come stock on most Ventures.

Supposedly I'll rub more than the OP because my "TRD Pro" wheels have a lower offset which "increases their scrub radius." That said, I don't know the offset of either wheel, and the TRD OR wheels would extend .25" wider on each side, so...

I agree that 275's look perfect on the 4Runner, especially with a mild lift, however I was surprised to see just how tight they are in there, so I'm not sure the truck should have them stock lol.

You don't need an alignment for new wheels, tires, or spacers. Also, you can use the 2020 alignment specs.. the only thing that changed on the truck from 2020 to 2021 is light bulbs.

The Pro wheels are most likely your issue because of their offset.

On the Pros, workers at port do the fender liner mod before they get shipped to the dealers.

I don't know for sure if they do the fender liner mod of the Ventures or not, but with your experience, I'm guessing they don't.

You best solution is to perform the fender liner mod (if it's no already done) and since you are also rubbing on your mudflap, you're going to want to get an alignment to push your caster up a little. Somewhere around +3.5 will get you away from the mudflap rub.

Goodyear? Wow.. I see only Wrangler MT/Rs in that size (275/70 R17) at Discount tire. That's one serious tire..

Is the "fender liner mod" your referring to the one where you unscrew the front of the fender liner, push it forward, and re-screw it in (roughly)?

For the mud flap, I can literally push it back with my finger enough so that it doesn't rub, but it doesn't want to stay put there. I think I should be able to rig up a solution to keep it held back, more closely to the actual body, enough so that I do not rub. When I say mild rubbing, I mean mild.

Yeah, that's the fender liner mod......while adding a small trim of the fender flare where you pushed the liner forward.

The mudflap can be pushed back with a heat gun and a little pressure. Some people drill a couple of holes in their mud flaps and pull them back with zip ties. Increasing your caster will move your tire forward in the wheel a bit and get you away from the mudflap so you wouldn't have to do either of those. Just depends on what's easiest for you.

Not sure about fender liner mod for 275s, This is the mod I did to fit 285s (from timeline 1:41 on the video)

Should of specified 265’s Ultraterrain. Had upper ball joint separated to install spacer. Figured alignment should be done

It depends on your offset (and alignment). With more positive offsets, you can get away with running larger tires without the need to trim.

However, as your offset gets lower, you start to rub in those areas......even with smaller tires.

Some guys who run -38 offsets will rub with stock 265's.

Oh, that kind of spacer. Yes, you'd want an alignment for that. I assumed you were talking about wheel spacers since this is a wheel and tire thread.

Really? Tire size should be a table setting the ECU reads to calculate correct mph and should be updatable. Can't see Toyota putting on a tire and releasing a vehicle to the public that shows wrong mph.

Every manufacturer (that I've owned, so BMW, Mazda, Toyota, and Nissan.. at least) sets up their vehicles so that the speedo reads wrong. Why? I dunno. Probably some legal BS and I can't blame them with today's society. At least it probably keeps people out of traffic citations, since most are driving around more slowly than they realize. It's a small difference though, typically ~3%.

It's true. Compare the speed on your dash to one of those signs that reads your speed. With stock tires you'll be a couple of mph's off.

Put 285's on and your speedo will be dead nuts with the speed radar.

So I just put stock size wildpeak load range c on my brand new 21 4 runner but now I’m getting a tiny bit of a shimmy right around 60mph. Do you get and type of shimmer or steering wheel shake? Iv taken them back and had them balanced twice now but it’s still there. I know your running one size up but curioushow they are at highway speeds.

The comments below are correct. I have 285/70/17's and my speedometer is almost perfectly accurate. Every Toyota I have owned has shown the speed a pinch high (with stock size tires). I have no idea why this is, but I've confirmed it with GPS and by using mile markers on the freeway back in the olden days. :D
