Hey guys so my 05 didn’t come with the spare tire carrier under. Looks like it was rusted out. Anybody had this issue? Can I just replace it? If so, how difficult is it? Thanks.

Depends on the condition of the cross member underneath that it mounts too. I think it’s just 4 bolts that holds the carrier on to that piece, and as long as that’s in good shape, should be easy enough to buy the replacement and bolts and mount it back up.

If that cross member is rotted out though.. you’d be best to go with an alternate solution, like a hinge mounted carrier, or aftermarket bumper with carrier. (Which is an ideal solution anyways; spares take a beating underneath, especially if you off-road at all).

Thanks man I appreciate the input. I’m gonna definitely check out if it’s in good condition. I don’t do any off-roading so I rather have the spare under instead of putting aftermarket carrier. Thanks a lot!!

Crossmember looks like it’s in good enough shape; but you might not have much fun getting the old one out. Those bolts are likely seized solid, especially when you don’t have a lot of room to work with to get them out.

You might need a bit of soaking before twisting. A penetrating lubricant and easy with the socket. If all else fails there is always the torch for heating and cutting.

never been a big fan of the spare underneath. too much moisture, mud, etc...Toyota should have designed a rack on the back door, much like the isuzu Troopers...
