What's with the stinking gas mileage?

I just swapped out of my 2015 Xterra Pro-4x (stick shift) into a brand spanking new 2021 ORP. I absolutely LOVE IT! .... BUT....why am I only getting 10.2 miles per gallon?

I did an experiment, and for the last 10 days I've been driving like a sedated grandma on quaaludes, (the stinking "Eco" light never went off, not even for a nanosecond) and I'm still only getting 10.2 MPG!

The 4Runner is advertised as 16 MPG city / 19 MPG highway

Am I doing something wrong? What am I missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.... Thx!

Here's my test giving me 19.3mpg after 246miles trip in CO.
2018 TRD ORP + OME 3in lift + 285/70 R17 + sliders + full skids,etc..

 

Either you're doing something very wrong or there is something very wrong with your truck! Try resetting your mpg readout and taking a steady 60mph cruise and see what it tells you.

 

Reset the MPG display. Fill the tank and calculate your MPG by hand at the next full-up. Compare to the display. That’s the best way to determine if you really have a problem.

 

Distance is in km but I changed fuel consumption to mpg so you can compare:

 

It looks like you’re lifted with some 285’s in your profile picture. I’m also guessing it’s pretty cold in New York this time of year. The cold really sucks up my MPG’s during the winter, usually by 1.5mpg-2mpg.
But, I get about 14.5mpg during the coldest part of winter. Lifted on 295’s.
Also, are those short trips?

 

Like everyone is saying...and it helps to not drive it like a Mopar lol easy peasy enjoy the drive.

Not sure by you but not just the 4r, every winter they use winter blend gas that drops 2mpg in Chicago. I've tested this starting with a warm engine and running 100 mile trips so the cold start warmup theroy is not all true.
My summer average with 285s is 19 driving normal but can squeeze it to 23. Winter I'm at 17 and gave up trying for more

My MPG dropped to 17.9 with the addition of steel skid plates.
Was holding around 18.7.

10.2mpg - sound there's something wrong with the nut behind the steering wheel.

 

I recently purchased by used 2013 limited. The MPG avg was stuck at 17.4 no matter what I do. I went full "Windows 95" reset mode on it and reboot my car by disconnecting battery for 10 minutes. That reset the average and calibrated all calculations. Now AVG MPG seems to working as it should and I am getting 18.something driving in the city using ECO mode.

 

Do you let your 4runner sit and idle for long periods of time to warm up etc? Also I drive it like I stole it and I average 19-20 with a 2.5" lift and 255/80R17 + ski racks on top.

Also I've reset vehicles in the past by touching the leads together for 10ish seconds
Maybe don't have to in the runner...like Ray did

Lol! Hahah - Nothing nutty goin on here, I promise! Like I said, I been driving her like a sedated grandma... resetting the MPG meter frequently... Still - Only getting between 10.2 and 10.6 MPG!!! Crazy!

Give reset a shot by disconnecting battery for 10 minutes. It might help. After resetting, drive around a bit in City and highway to calibrate the car computer.

 

I just thought of something...

Let me check if Ive been driving on 4x4 this entire time, instead of 4x 2....

 

Should not make much of a difference. My limited is always 4x4

 

I'm kind of surprised nobody else has mentioned this: You need to reset the average mileage. If that hasn't been reset since you bought it, you're looking at an average of all of the movement of it being shunted around the dealers parking lot, sitting and idling as people looked at it,
all of the city driving for test drives, etc. Reset the average every time you get gas to give you a more accurate snapshot of your driving habits. The average mpg is a separate reset from the trip odo, at least on 19 and older.

Ya something's off. I average 42-44mpg with the 285s. Before the lift and bigger tires low 50mpg was the average. Oh nm. This was Going downhill. Foot off the gas. On neutral...

 

Did you calculate the mileage manually like ElectroBoy suggested? I don't even look at the MPG display anymore. I'll calculate it manually if I'm curious. BTW, lifted/285's/aftermarket rack/RSG sliders = 17 - 18 MPG normally for me. I'm not shy with the go-pedal either...

Question...do you drive a prius masked as a 4runner? (In my album) you'll see what i mean lol

 

I remember when mine was brand spanking new. I believe its because the computer has no baseline data so it shows really poor mileage. Mine did. The more miles I put on it (6000 now) the closer it gets to 16-19.

 

OP, is your 4Runner E85 compatible? They had a TON of problems with E85 compatible Tundras with the 5.7 and the computers thinking it was running E85 all the time when it wasn't.

My mileage has always been bad, but not 10.2 bad. I average about 15, which is worse than my 5.7 Tundra gets. Yeah V6!
