A dastardly thought !

Yesterday I cruised out to the local pic a part, where there’s 7-8 Gen 2’s in stock, man they don’t last long, they get stripped pretty fast. I didn’t need much just a few bolts and a rear tail light housing. Which is frustrating because if the rear window is up your not getting the assembly .

In the same row are two Land Rovers. I started looking at the front solid axle assembly on them, broke out a tape measure and started taking measurements. Going between that and one 95 4X4 T4R they are very close to matching in width and the pumpkin is maybe an inch more towards the driver side than our 4X’s.

It’s really tempting to go pull one from the Land Rover, bring it home, break out the grinders and saws and strip it down to a bare axle housing and convert it to a leaf spring solid front axle setup for my 1990.

Interdasting, very tempting. The only downside is my little Hobart welder wouldn’t be capable of the heavier welding.

 

Sounds like an interesting project.

 

Why not just use a Toyota axle?

 

I have thought about this for a while also. But I question myself, do I need it. Probably not. But it would be fun. I want duel t causes also.

I’m talking to the wife, there’s 2 land rovers there. The one I was measuring looks to be a nice complete unit...I know there’s a few more things involved with doing it but damn it all to hell. Strike while the irons hot and I can get one cheap.

As far as a Toyota axle, cause $7000 for the kit and you still need springs and all. I’ve been looking for 2 years and have never seen anything locally that I could snatch.

I just sold a Toyota solid axle for 500 bucks. You could put 1 tons under a 4runner for under 7k.

 

Ok, now throw in a brand new axle complete and ready to go on that kit there. I’m not going to post because you seem to be pretty good. When I say complete that means everything, all you need are tires and a driveshaft.

But I appreciate where your coming from and the thriftiness in mind, I truly do because I’m the king of doing things reasonably and below cost.

 

Hahahaha calling me out on what? And what am I scared of? I wasn't trying to piss you off i just don't understand where you got the idea it cost 7k to SAS a vehicle. I have a pickup I'm in the process of putting chevy full widths under a pickup and have nowhere near 7k into it. Shit me and my buddy 3 linked his tacoma and it was under 3k.

Now if you’ve got a complete setup sitting up there in Oregon, my son lives in Grants Pass .

I’m not upset at all, but you not understanding where I’m getting that number from confuses me, it’s damn expensive to go with a nice setup. Hence for $200 bucks I snatch the Land Rover Axle and it’s just labor and maybe that kit, and a few other things.

 

Definatly not apples to apples. That's a fully built custom axle. Im saying to SAS a rig does not cost 7k. To build a rig you can spend as much as you want. Go find a junkyard 70s ford 4x4 to get some axles. It's not gonna cost 7k. Youre comparing a junkyard land rover axle to a rock assault or brand new toyota axle. I don't feel like that is a fair comparison.
