Front end vibration on braking

New to both 4runner ownership and forum I am a very lucky dude.. I have a 98 T4R limited 4wd w/out Elocker I'm having moderate vibration in the front end on braking at speeds over 40mph. On a couple instances I've had constant vibration over 50mph after it started to vibrate bit not before I haven't place it on the rack yet to check for anything obvious.. Any ideas my people?,, I will appreciate any and all ideas and input

 

Sounds like your rotors may be warped. May also make sure your lugs are tight. My steering started shaking like that once and found out 4 of my lugs were lose on one side. Scary.

 

I would also say warped rotors.

If not rotors then maybe seized caliper. That’s what was wrong with mine and it had the same problem as yours

 

Yeah, start with the rotors.

If you're so inclined...replace the ball joints anyways as that is a known weak spot on this car. My ball joints got me to around 250k miles. I have a theory that they contribute to early rotor warpage.

My rotors would increasingly pick up vibration sooner over time (had the car since new). I kept turning/replacing them to remove the vibration. Seems since I replaced the ball joints and rotors, braking has remained smoother longer. I may be delusional too.

I'm having a similar problem. I have a 2000 4Runner Limited. When braking at speeds over 40mph, I get a definite vibration. It only occurs when applying the brakes, and seems to go away under 40mph. I have had the front rotors and pads replaced, and they have turned the rear drums, but it is still there? It doesn't seem to pull to one side or the other, just vibration?

Any thoughts on what is causing this? I'm guessing its the calipers, but I hate to replace them without knowing that it is indeed the calipers?

Any suggestions?

Same car and model, same problem. I just took it to the shop and they replaced the lower ball joints, rack bushings, turned the rotors and replaced the front pads. I just got it back and haven't really test drove it. So I can't say it fixed it but I am assuming it has. Mine has 220K miles.

 

Just wanted to close the loop on my experience with this issue. I'm sure there are others with difference experiences, and my solution may not match your problem, but I wanted to share regardless.

Background: I had a vibration when braking above 40 miles an hour. So I took it to a independent shop and they replaced the front rotors and pads, and turned rear drums. Vibration was better, but was still there. After a week, I took it back to the shop that put the rotors on, and they put a 2nd set of rotors on at no charge. However, the vibration was still there. At this point, they suggested it might be a calipers, but they weren't sure.

I then took it to a different shop, and they wanted to replaced the rotors and pads AGAIN. I was reluctant, but finally I agreed, and this fixed the vibration! They said that the other rotors were just bad quality (I don't know what brand they were). I took rotors back to the first shop and they were happy to give me my money back on the rotors. They said it is not unusual to get a bad set of rotors every now and then, but two sets was very unusual, and they apologized. They also said that they were considering changing their supplier.

I wouldn't have believed two sets of brand new rotors to be bad, but I do now.

Hey, I am surprised no one has mentioned this earlier. I have a 96 4x4 manual 6 cyl Runner. Had the brake pedal vibration even after replacing the disks. Saw a bolt on T100 replacement mod, did it, and have not had any problems since. I pulled a heavy trailer Seattle to Phoenix, they work just fine.

it is an easy, bolt on mod, check it out.
