Break-in Damage

Hi everyone,

So my new (to me) 4Runner was broken into. Looks like they tried to make off with the whole truck but failed to hotwire it. Did a lot of damage to the ignition in the process.

Problem is, I am having trouble identifying the part(s) I need to fix this. I've gone through my Haynes manual and the Toyota part site and still don't have names/numbers. I'm wondering if anyone here can ID this whole assembly? I know I need a new ignition lock set, but what is the name of the housing it all sit in. These guys must've taken a crowbar to the inside of it.

My auto insurance covers nothing. My renter's insurance will cover some of the stolen items, but likely won't cover damage to the vehicle.

Regardless, I'm trying to identify the parts so that I can possibly repair this myself. Just having trouble getting specific names/part numbers. Anyone hip to where I could get these part numbers?

Alternatively go to a pick and pull and pull what's broken.

You probably won't be able to buy some of these interior parts anymore from the dealer. The ignition switch, yes, but not the housing or steering column. You'll still need to hit a junkyard.

 

Did you only have PLPD?

DARN, so sorry this happened....The last time something like this happened on my street, the thief got shot by the owner..damn straight...I'm so tired of this on going stealing.....best thing, is go to your local bone yard...and see if you can pull a replacement item...good luck...

 

What happened to the alarm system?

Thanks everyone. Pick and pull it is. It's a pain that I'll have to do the work on the street since I can't move the damned thing in this condition.

No alarm in my model. Might consider adding one if I can swing it.

 

Blows you have to deal with this. Hopefully you find what you need at the pick and pull, but don't be surprised if you can't find squat. Maybe it's regional, but not a lot of Toyota trucks make it to the pick and pull around here. They are scooped up and parted out by themselves. Your local pick and pull should have an online inventory or you should be able to call them to see what vehicles they have on the lot. That way you don't waste your time.....but a day at the pick and pull walking around looking at everything and everyone can be fun too.

 

exactly...I've done that several times...spending the day, walking up and down the misc aisles, looking at the cars ...ranging from mustangs, to misc SUV's..

 

Well I managed to get a whole new assembly. The shear bolts were a pain to get out (thank you dremel), but it's all installed and it works.

Next up: install a kill switch...

 

I am not sure what the crime rate in your area is, especially for motor vehicle theft (actual theft or attempted), but is it worth considering full coverage or is the value of your rig vs. what you would pay out in full coverage not worth it? I know insurance rates vary from state to state, as well as demographic considerations, so my question is genuine and not intended to be anything other than that.

 

I have since added full comp to my insurance with only a $100 deductible.

For sure. I am still working on placement of a kill switch and I think I'm gonna buy a Club as well. And I've been pulling a couple key fuses each time I park in the meantime. Anything to confound them.

Goodness! Is vehicle theft/break-ins rampant in your area? That's a lot of measures. I just can't stand those who seek to do such direct/indirect harm to someone.
