    Hello everybody,

i have a question. I have a 4Runner limited 2017. I find that running the 17inch winter tire at around 29-30 psi cold (30-31 when "hot" after 5 minutes) have way better grip in the snow/ice that the 32 PSI. I find that they are more comfortable also. It is "dangerous" to run tire around 29-31 PSI on the 17inch. for prolonged time ? I don't care about the fuel economy since I prefer more grip in winter condition.

    Thank you ! : )

Airing down a tire will yield better grip and ride comfort, as there’s more tread on the ground and more “cushion”. I’m no expert, but depending where you live it might be appropriate to run that PSI at all times. Wheel size doesnt matter, you can have a 16 inch or 20 inch wheel and 30 psi is the same for both tires. For me, that’s too low and I wouldn’t daily drive on that psi. I run 40psi year round, and air down if needed for road conditions (snowy mountain passes and such).

Thank you for your input. Yeah I realized that them give more comfort at lower PSI and better grip. I live in Canada so we have a lot of cold weather snow and ice so low PSI seem to be good in this weather. The only problem I have, I wonder if this a problematic PSI to bust a tire from underinflation.

If I remember from an off-road program from Andrew St Pierre White, running lower-than-normal pressures at highway speeds cause the tires to heat up and fail prematurely, especially in the sidewall, and especially on short sidewall tires. There are tires built for comfort and others built for utility. Reckon we should pick the tires for our use particular use case and go from there. I chose a C-load 3PMSF AT-type LT tire and the comfort is quite nice with decent winter traction.

For your specific question, I personally don’t think that pressure will cause undue wear or damage at normal speeds in winter conditions. Dedicated winter tires provide comfort and grip, of course, at normal pressures.

Thank you Chris, I also read somewhere that running low psi can cause the tire to fail prematurely, but running them 2 psi below the "normal", I also don't think that it is really problematic for this kind of tire (I run DMV2 winter tires).
