Hi everyone, just bought a 2001 4runner and noticed it was leaking a little oil. It appears to be coming from this silver part but I don’t know enough about vehicles to know what this is. It is on the driver said and about 3-4 inches from the oil filter. Any ideas?

Thanks and excited to be part of this forum after coming from tacoma world.

Looks like the bolt holding your upper control arms. I would check your valve covers to see if that’s leaking which woukd drip down to this part.

Welcome From Wisconsin! Is this part attached to the side of the block as it appears? It almost looks like you can read the part number, write the number down, call Toyota parts dept., ask them what it is, and if they have one in stock.

    I'm really curious now!

Bump! Hopefully one of the super smart members will see this and know exactly what it is.

Or, maybe we'll get a better picture of the part number.

It’s the oil cooler! I have a 95 and recently replaced the O rings on it to fix a small leak. The hoses attached are coolant hoses and will drain when you take them off so I went ahead and did a coolant flush at the same time

We have a Winner! Way to go Tom! braahk, a little brake cleaner to clean the area, a few new "o" rings, and your back in business.

I was doing a bunch of maintenance to the engine (valve covers for one). Figured I'd replace the oil cooler seals and the bolt gasket as those are cheap and the oil cooler leaks are a known issue.

I got the bolt off...and that damn oil cooler was like it was welded to the side of the block.

I gave up and just put the bolt back in.

Couldn't tell if it was leaking or not. It was covered in oil. I'm hoping it was due to the valve coves which were leaking a quart a month.

Make sure you buy TOYOTA gaskets/rings and the bolt washer WHICH IS NOT REUSABLE.
