Looking for tire size recommendations

I’m coming from KO2’s and I think these did way better

 

I had KO2's as well. They were better than the dumbflops in snow, but not as good as my previous Yokohama Geolanders or the Kumho AT51's.

 

Nitto doesn’t once mention all season winter performance in relation to the Ridge Grapplers, in fact they don’t even bother rating them on winter/snow performance on their own website.

K02s on the other hand have the 3PMSF (3 peak mountain snow flake) designation. The requisite test to qualify for that is a spin test (ASTM E1136-14) that measures acceleration traction in medium-packed snow (typical of what you’d drive in between passes of a plow. Any tire carrying the 3PMSF mark is legal considered a winter tire in places that they are required by law. That’s definitely not the end all be all of winter traction, that is the only test required, nothing about braking for example.

There is no chance the Ridge Grapplers would meet the 3PMSF requirements but they would choose not to add the insignia to the sidewall, especially in the All Terrain category where Duratracs, K02s, and Wildpeak AT3W, all tires that carry the 3PMSF designation, seem to dominate.

Maybe off-roading in deep snow the Ridge Grapplers might do alright since they self clear pretty well and meant to be “hybrid” tires that split the gap between mud terrains and all terrains, but they don’t have shit for siping and weren’t designed with driving on snowy roads to be any part of the equation.

I also went from K02s to Ridge Grapplers. I didn’t think the K02s were great but they were definitely ahead of the Ridge Grapplers driving up the mountains to go skiing.

 

I get all the fancy lingo from the KO2’s, but I ran them for two seasons and they had worse traction in snow than the nittos. I haven’t had too much experience with the nittos on ice yet though. Maybe they deliver different performance in different areas, who knows but my experience so far is the nitto is a superior tire than the KO2 for my driving needs.

 

I've been running the Cooper Evolution MTs in 285 and we've had a couple of winter events the past week or so. I have been very impressed with them. 4wd has not been required in any scenario from highway bombing in heavy slush to mud running on a back road. I drove into town last night during a snow storm on 100% snow and slush covered roads in 2wd and didn't have a single warning light come on.

But, when you are poor and can only afford one set of tires to do everything from daily driving to getting you out of the mountains, you tend to forgive things like road noise and MPG loss.

But, old rednecks like me also have a few tricks up our sleeves like having a set of tires siped. I know that option is not available in most parts of the country, but it is common out here. I had a set of Patagonia MTs siped a few years ago and they were great in all conditions.

I did have to use 4wd today to hook up to my utility trailer in my lower lot. It was snow covered and on an incline, and I was spinning out. Rather than destroy the turf, I put it in 4wd and gently backed up to the trailer. Still, I was able to move backwards, but the Coopers were destroying my lawn, lol.

Get 275/70r17 tires. Load range E is fine and recommended if you are going to actually offroad or go over rocks. They are basically a 32.5x11 and need no modification at full lock/bump. 285s are not needed nor worth the work to fit for the extra 0.5 of an inch.

No, they should fit stock even just fine with no rubbing. If you have aftermarket wheels though, you may have them rub.

 

Off road wheels are +19 offset, I think. So, a 3/4" spacer puts you at basically 0 offset. I think you'd be fine. If anything, you might have to heat up the mudflaps and adjust them.

 

Offset is the measurement from center of the wheel to where it meets the hub. Negative offset pushes the wheel out. Positive pulls in. So, +19 offset means the center of the wheel is 19mm closer to the truck from the hub surface.

 

Is your spacer on your suspension or wheel?

 

Oh, nevermind. I was thinking wheel spacer.

 

@A&P those 275's should fit fine with stock wheels.

The 285s I bought were $161 each on Walmart.com this summer. Which is why I tried them out. The Falkens had increased about $30 a tire at the same time and were the tires I was going to go with.

But, the price increase on the Falkens and the sale price on the Coopers swayed my decision. The Coopers went back up to over $200 a tire in October or so.

 

What type of tires are these ? BFg ? I really like them

 

Whats the maximum size of tire you can fit underneath as a spare? That should be the question.

Most off road down here is South Padre Island. They do good is the sand.
Have Nitto Ridgegrapplers on my FJ that are awesome in the sand also. Just a couple years old the Nitto's are make some noise.
Both trucks see rotate and balance every 5k. The Nitto's still look brand new.
