    Hey all,

Joined the club and got myself a new 2020 TRD ORP back in February of this year. I elected to skip the free toyotacare 5k / 6 month service like many of you because 1) it doesn't include an actual oil change, 2) due to covid I had less than 5k miles after 6 months, and 3) why let anyone touch anything if things ain't broke!

Anyways I just reached 4500 miles at 8 months and now the 'oil maintenance required soon' indicator is alerting me every time I start up the vehicle. What's up with that if an oil change is required every 10k/12 months? Is this just the normal 5K interval alert and should I just ignore it?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum!

You can reset the maintenance warning yourself. The method is somewhere in the manual.

Even though you're not getting the oil changed, I recommend rotating the tires every 5K.

I bought mine at CowboyToyota in Dallas. Nice outfit. However, ended up using Family Toyota in Burelson, TX... one of the most friendly Toyota dealerships I’ve been to for device. Although useless to some, I take advantage of “free” stuff.

    This is a good point.

@rockstar , if you're not putting on a lot of miles, it's a good idea to change the oil at least twice a year. Usually fall and spring, regardless of mileage is a good rule of thumb.

Actually the more miles put On the later you can wait the oil has a better chance to burn off impurity’s when used regularly to temp

As others have said, rotate the tires and reset the light.

Then rotate and change the oil and filter at 10k. No need to do more maintenance than the manual recommends.

Also, ask your dealership for a discount if you buy a case of filters. IIRC, the case comes with 10 filters, so it'll last you 100k and you'll get the OEM filters for something like $4.10 each.

True, but keep in mind that the manual recommends 5K intervals in some pretty common scenarios.

My 2020 is ready for an oil change with 4689 miles. Purchased 11/19. Oil change is every 10K miles or 12 months whichever occurs first. CCP Virus keeps me home. This will be my 1st service visit as tires did not need rotation @6 mos./ 2K miles.

I will say this; when I do the oil changes on the 4Runner. I buy a filter only from the dealership (with a notation of the milage on the receipt). I then go buy the oil & do my thing. Then I can prove the milage matches the oil changes. The more you can prove the better odds you have! If it is needed (hopefully not!).

I literally just got back from the dealership. I bought my 2019 brand new in March 2020 from our indie fleet dealer.
Brought it in today for an oil change and some other minor stuff, fully intending to pay for the oil change since I was at 10k km/6k miles.
Looked at my bill after getting home and found that they didn't do an oil change, only greased my driveshaft.

Called them up, the answer was as follows: The oil was analyzed and found to be in excellent condition. We checked/adjusted all the fluids and you're good to go for.......a year after your purchase of the vehicle?

Like, wtf? A year? I purchased a remote spin-off oil filter kit but wanted to wait 'till my warranty coverage was over (popping the heavy front skid plate near well killed me last time around and the damn filter is under the truck as many of you know).
Well, screw the warranty. I'm taking measurements for the oil lines this weekend and will have the remote filter installed soon. Then do my own oil change as I usually do on most of my vehicles.

They won’t change your oil under 10k miles/1 year unless you request.

I did. I specifically asked for an oil change. This is the 1st time for me that a dealership has refused to do an oil change. I fully intended to pay....
