I am in the process of thinking about what to include in a new ‘21 Off-Road Premium. I kind of like moonroofs, but realize that they have the potential to leak over time. Has anybody had any issues with previous years in this regard with the 4Runner? Thanks.

I've got a '20 Offroad Premium and we've had a ton of rain recently. No trouble at all.

2016, none so far. It's important to note that the majority of moonroof leaks are due to the drains being clogged with junk. The seal around the outside of the body hole doesn't keep water out- it's the function of the drains underneath to evacuate it. Snake some weedwhacker line down the drains every few years (or more if you park under trees with lots of flowers/sap/seeds) to keep them functioning properly.

Guess I wouldn't say caulked more like silicone or something.

My second car (90 CRX) back in the day we siliconed the shit out of it and called it day. No leaks.

Why fix a 20 year old sun roof. Then it will last longer than the car lol.

If you're asking me today, I'd just grab a working sunroof in good shape from the junkyard. But back when I was a kid I took all kinds of shortcuts that I'd regret now. I'm going through that now with my old Volkswagen Beetle. I've had it as a project car since I was fifteen and some of my "fixes" make me shake my head at my younger self.

I'd prolly trash a 20 year old car with a leaking sun roof before wasting time in a junk yard. Of course depending on the car. But a DD? Not worth my time.

I never use the sunroof. I mean I can still get sun from it. The only time I opened it was standing up out of it one time after a bachelor party. But ya with all the windows down and it open its almost like a convertible...

A CRX with a functional sunroof would probably catch a few bucks these days. Just sayin.

Never had a problem with any of my 'Runners. Gen 3, two Gen 4's, and two Gen 5's. No problems with two Cressidas, a Supra or a Lexus, either. They're freakin' Toyotas. LOL!

most of these roofs, are still working and in decent shape, sans any real rust. mine are in great shape...I open 'em up from time to time...keep'em clean, etc......20 + years on, and no rust, etc...on my '97

I've opened mine just 'bout every time I go out ... smoker. Yeah I know. They're great popped up when it's hot, and especially with the dogs in the truck along with all the windows down a bit. Gotta close it when I get back into the garage ... MICE! They got into my Tundra, Mustang and '13 'Runner.

I had an '85 Supra with a moon roof and a 2003 4runner as well no leaks on either one with 200+K miles and I didn't even know you had to worry about clogged drains.

My '87 MR2 with T-tops was a different story. I used to drive with a garbage bag on my lap. :D :rain:

This thread is much funnier than I would’ve expected given the title. It’s also a bit nostalgic with talking about Supra’s and other old cars.

There's a decent following for those cars. They don't weigh anything so a little power goes a long way. A friend has one making around 225 HP and it's FAST!

Don't have a pic of the '88 scanned yet, but here is the '83.

Sorry OP, we got kinda side tracked and hijacked yer post. My bad. But at 102K miles, with a slide sun roof, no leaks. Gave it to my niece, and no leeks after 200K+ miles. Hope that helps ya.
