Been doing a lot of reading and learning over the last few weeks.

I see some reviews knocking the 5th gen for its "manual transfer case" on the part-time 4WD models. I'm not sure what they mean by that? Is it that with the lever you're physically/mechanically engaging the transfer case instead of a button that does it electronically? Or do they mean something else?

And can you tell me anything else interesting or notable about the transfer case on these? Are they chain driven? Gear driven? Especially reliable?

    Thanks very much in advance!

Not sure where you read bad stuff on them.

Depends on what model you have. SR5 is a dial. TRD OR and Pro is a Lever.

Not 100% mechanical there is still an actuator.

If it’s 4Runner people they tend to get butthurt about it having a knob vs a lever, if it’s media people they tend to get butthurt that 4WD has to manually be engaged instead of an auto setting that switches it to 4WD when there is wheel slip detected.

The actuator is for the front differential disconnect. The Tcase itself on the current model trd OR or PRO is full manual engagement.

I miss the lever I had in the FJ. Actually miss the FJ but different story. I wish both the Tacoma and the 4Runner had the manual stick for 4WD.

It sure doesn't feel like it. Always seems like mine is delayed.

But explains why it vibrates like mad 24/7

Do you mean the dash light is delayed?

The transfercase is manually actuated so there is no delay. You're probably talking about the front differential engagement having a delay.

    Thats prolly it.

I don't jam it in and start driving until I see the light.

Never did try to switch to 4HI while moving at slow speeds.

UH I know you can shift while moving. Just was stating I've never done it nor have I needed to do so.
