I'm looking for tire recommendations. I am leaning toward putting Nitto Ridge grapplers on my Pro. I'm in Florida and will be playing in the mud and sand. Tell me what tire you would run and why.

    Thanks.

I have been a long time fan of Nitto.
Used to run there street tires all through the 90's & '00's.
Buddies & I have had horrible luck with their terra grapplers.
I like the look of the ridge grapplers but in my climate I need more siping.
I love my Duratracs. As I have stated they are on both of my work trucks, friends truck & our T4R.
No noise & great lifespan. Others have problems with this & on 4 trucks I have had no issues.
    Just my $0.02.
    Pics when you get please.
P.S. the Duratracs are made in Canada if that matters. These are factory size tires on the T4R and 35" on the Dodge.20190414_194654.jpg

The terra grapplers (the factory tires on the Pro), are horrible in anything but dry concrete.
They pack with snow & mud instantly. That can lead to scary sliding situations.
The terra grapplers seem to be easily punctured also.
My buddy went through 2 pairs of the Terra grapplers then went to Duratracs and was pissed he didn't do it sooner.
If you don't do much rain or snow driving the Ridge grapplers may be great.
It is a safety issue for me.

My only concern would be siping.
You can have a tire shop add more siping if you find the spinning or sliding to a stop.
I personally have no experience with the Ridge grapplers. I do like the look of them!

My Ridge Grapplers are a lot better than my K02s were for wet weather braking.

Very happy with my Ridge Grapplers in all weather conditions. No noise issues so far. I have about 12,000 miles on them.

I had Duratracs on my Tacoma, and while they were quiet for a while...they got so loud at around 30,000 miles that I could barely stand them. And yes, they were rotated regularly. I was happy with the performance in all weather...just not the noise.

I have heard of the noise issue.
Owning 3 sets of & a friend with another.
    I have never experienced this.
    Not saying it doesn't happen.
Are you sure it was the tires & not a u-joint or something?

On the loud tire noise note:
Do not buy mud grapplers! They sound like a plane coming down the road.
I had them for a few years on my Ford (33x12.5-20). My rockers have huge rock chips!
    Great tire though!

    Yes.

On a related note, I saw your post above and was surprised at your comments about the Terra Grapplers. I've never ran them, but a few of my friends at work have them and are happy with them.

I have 16000+ miles on my Ridge Grapplers. I think they are Great, but this is the first set on my first 4Runner (2018). Simpletire have them on sale at $205 and then A 15% discount on top of that. These are load range C, thats what most run on 4Rs.

Okay, apparently I am coming off wrong.
I am not saying the Duratracs are the tire answer for everyone.
However, owning a lawn, landscaping, snow & salt application business I can tell you I feel 100% confident in my tires in snow slush or rain. (I plow restaurant lots with $250k cars in them & am not hesitant about them)
With the torque of my diesels & if it just started raining. Sure, they will break loose. However, I can "plow" through 2ft of standing runoff water & it doesn't hydroplane (in the T4R) . It just shoots the water away! I look for deep areas that I know are safe, it is ridiculous!
Please, ask away! I have owned these tires for over 7 yrs now. The only thing I haven't done with them is rock crawling. With all the side knobs; I believe they would excel there also.
Again, if a different tire works for you. More power to you. I have just found that for a 365 day year with a full 4 seasons a year & with unknown weather these tires will get the job done.
That is why they are my #1 pick.
Followed by the Ridge Grapplers; which I believe came out after the Duratracs...
    I digress.

    Again sir,
    I mean no confrontation.
I have simply seen my friends plow truck (F-350 diesel) become a rolling liability with those tires. They pack with snow & ice & don't self clean. I have pulled him out!
He has also told me stories of trying to get his camper into a wet spot & his tires just become a roll of mud. The Duratracs self clean with little throttle.

Falken Wildpeak At3w and new mt have gained some interest in the past few years. I see them as the new bfg offroad tire replacement. I had bfg at E, toyo open country at E, and now Wildpeak in 285 P . They are my favorite set, lighter tires and lighter wheels help greatly. FALKEN raised their prices after they realized ppl would still pay more you just have to be cautious of the tire that doesn't balance well, then have them replaced under warranty if road force balancing wasn't a solution, easily done by the store or from falken warranty. The newer hopped up model jeeps also comes with Wildpeaks, bfg was dropped.

We've been running Ridge Grapplers for close to 30,000 miles. They do okay on wet surfaces but do tend to hydroplane a bit during a downpour.

Bring this post back to life. All Ridge Grapplers owners. Still happy with them. Would you change to something else. Trying to get some info from 4runner owners that been driving on them for quite awhile and have some miles on them.

I wanted Wildpeaks but they didn’t make them in the size I wanted so I went with Ridge Grapplers. I’m very happy with them, except for in snow. Falken now makes the AT3W in the size I want so I’ll probably try that next. The only think that might potentially keep me sticking to the Ridge Grapplers is a full sized unused tire. I bought 5 last time, I don’t want to buy 5 again.

I have 15k miles on mine on my 3rd gen. I like them, great in all conditions so far. Rain is not a problem, hard-pack and gravel it can get loose but so did my STT Pros. I will be running Toyo RT's on my RAM though, i feel like for 32's mine are a little loud and don't want a loud tire on my new truck. If they were released when i bought these, i would have gone with the Toyo Open Country AT IIIs.

Yeah that’s the bad review I’m reading up on that the grapplers are bad in the snow. That’s one reason for me not to get them. Tough decision.

I have one of these mounted on my SCS wheel 285 for test fit. My tire guy cannot get me anymore. Not available. He does not know from the vendor when they will be. That’s why I’m looking at another option. I don’t like the reviews on the grapplers about the snow conditions.

I chose not to go that route because I prefer to give the tire place the business I know the owner. I’m ok waiting for the Toyo’s to come back into stock. But he is able to get me the Ridge Grapplers. Also I get a better price from him. Thanks for the info.

I have to disagree. As a lifelong Alaskan who drives had the year on snow/ice, I have been extremely impressed with the stock Pro Terra Grapplers on my Pro on snow and ice. Have had zero issues with rain as well.

That being said, Duratracs are a very popular tire for all the HD trucks in the oil fields up north. Maybe it’s something with them mating great with the heavier HD trucks?

I have the Cooper Diso AT3 XLT’s on my Tundra, and really like them. Quiet, smooth, look great, great grip in all conditions, and are wearing very well. Was a tough choice between them abs the Toyo Open Country AT2 at the time.

If I was in the market today for a new set of rubber I would be getting the new Toyo Open Country AT3’s.

to add to this, I’d be very inclined to try the Grabber ATx but general doesn’t make a single tire in 255/80/17

I had KO2’s on my 4runner and when I bought new SCS wheels I decided to try new tires. I had Yokohama Geolander M/T and they were extremely loud, too loud TBH. If I was mudding on a consistent basis I would have kept them, they look amazing, but as my daily driver it just didn’t make sense. I decided to go Ridge Grappler and have been happy so far. They look more aggressive than the KO2, and ride softer. I live in Oregon and the rain will come, so curious to see how they will do. Below are pics of both the Yokohama and Nitto’s. The only issue I have seen so far is they tend to hold rocks more than my KO2’s did. Not a deal breaker though.

I’m running Nitto RG on my 4R and recently spent 6 days on the New Mexico Discovery Route. Most of the trip was on either hard packed dirt or gravel roads and when I returned home I noticed my tires did not fair too well. I have less than 20,000 miles on the tires and I did not do anything more difficult than already stated. I’ve used Duratracs, KO2, BFG AT on my Jeep over the years and never had the tire damage like with the Nittos. Just my recent experience with the Ridge Grapplers.
