Larger Tires vs. Safety Sense on 2020+

    Does anyone have information pertaining to potential issues with Safety Sense and increasing tire size, or any lift-related mods for that matter? I haven't even begun to consider what path to take lifting my 2020 ORP (no KDSS), but one thing that never occurred to me were issues increasing tire size or lifting. Now, I know there are plenty of folks out there who would do it and ask questions later, but that's just not my speed. Here's my current status:

    I had the KO2 265s (6-ply, for the record) installed, but they just look too small (duh) at stock height, which is where I plan to keep it for now aside from possibly adding spacers to level it out and correct the driver side lean. Disappointed with the small size (that's what she said) and still being in my 45-day return window with TireBuyer, I made the decision to trade these for the same tire in 275s (10-ply...I know). After calling the shop to ask about scheduling they informed me they're not allowed to install any size other than factory-recommended on 2020+ 4Runners due to Safety Sense and the dangers/liability of altering these settings. I called my dealer's svc department seeking advice, but they were about as helpful as Chris Wallace during a Presidential debate.

    So...

    Has anyone successfully had 2020+ Safety Sense recalibrated to standard after modifying anything? This includes Pre-Collision System with Vehicle & Pedestrian Protection, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, etc.

    There is nothing they would alter or calibrate.. They are just being difficult.

    I'd elevate your request as high as you can and push hard. If they still refuse then request a full refund and go somewhere else.

    I would normally agree, but this shop has no skin in the game. It's a new shop for me and the owner I spoke with is a friend of a friend. If he wasn't such a 'known' expert in the local tire game here I'd call his bluff, but now I'm just putting feelers out there for any answers to back up his claim. There's a solid chance I'll proceed with the 275s and never look back. Lord knows I'm not the only one doing so with a 2020.

    Vehicle manufactures never recommend modifying a vehicle due to liability concerns. Safety systems are built around a set of known parameters and when you modify a vehicle it may change the way the vehicle will behave when the safety system activates. The end user accepts responsibility for all modifications and the issues that may come up do to those modifications. You can't access or change the TSS settings to account for oversized tires or a lift. They are set at the factory.

    To answer your original question though, I have not heard of anyone having issues with TSS and oversized tires. If you go to 285+ you will have rubbing and may see sluggish acceleration and reduced fuel mileage, but you should be fine with 275s. Same goes for a lift, as long as you don't go crazy you won't have any issues. I have seen a few reports of TSS issues with large lifts (think it was Tacoma's) due to the change in angle of the camera and sensor. To my knowledge very few, if any have had issues on this board.

    A small lift and 275's will be no problem. Hopefully the manager will help you out since he is a friend. :cheers:

    well, dealer never recommends any modifications to the car. not even the grill. because it messes with calibration. but if you do kit and wide tires then you will void your warranty for suspension or noise while cornering but they are still liable for your engine and stuff not related to the modification.

    Lift away. A couple posts across the forums said safety sense and lifting ruined the runner... If true your odds are better at winning the lotto. 100s if not more have posted here and the other runner forum of zero issues after leveling. FYI, most not all speedometers are off from factory. mine any many many more have accurate speedometers with 285's

    Oddly enough, my dealer didn’t discourage me from going with 275s. They even said they’d install them for me. Seems to be a lack of knowledge about the latest safety features and the impact of mods. Either way, I’ve ordered my 275s and they’ll be on next week. I will continue my search for any additional information out of curiosity, but it won’t get in the way of enjoying my rig.

    I have a 2020 ORP, we installed a RevTek 3" front- 2" rear spacer kit and 275-70-17's from new at the dealership. There was NO recalibration done to it. Everything is fine, no warning lights on, and "All systems are a go". We have almost 2000 miles on it this way, and the TSS, cruise etc. all work the way they are supposed to! We have since replaced wheels from stock to some XD's at a tire shop, they were glad to help out.

    How’s the ride with the RevTeks? As I’ve said before, I’m pretty agnostic on spacers, but I’ve usually used them in very small increments to fine tune vehicle height or lean.

    The ride is good, (I've yet to save up the coins for the Elkas) but I have no ill feeling toward them. I lifted my Tacoma the same way. The ride on that was a little different on that though; more body roll and such.

    Do you need a lift if you just do 275 x70x17 on the 2020 ORP? Getting some snows soon and debating 275 instead of 265 on standard factory rims.

    Also wondering this! Stock wheels and tires right now. Thinking of the 275x70x17 wildpeak AT3... originally understood this size was fine, but now I'm hearing rub might happen?

    I am likely lifting as well, but also trying to make the two decisions independent of each other ...

    Answered my own snow question since Blizzaks don't come in 275.. still would like to know when I swap out my factory tires at some point.

    This I do not know. When I bought my 4Runner I had the dealership put the lift on it before we ever drove it. At first we had the factory rims on, but switched about a month later. The aftermarket rims we put on are 8" wide. The actual difference in the height of the tires (275 vs 265) I want to say the 275 is like 8 tenths of an inch taller than the 265. We have Cooper Discovery AT3 LT's. I forgot to mention we had the 275's on the factory rims but switched them over to the aftermarket rims. The Cooper tires have always worked good in the snow, they have lots of siping on them.

    Quick update on the 275s (will post photos later):

    I know it’s been said a thousand times, but for anyone considering the change from 265 to 275 tires, don’t hesitate to make that move! I have zero rubbing on my ORP and they just look more appropriate. I’ll be interested to see my before and after photos with the same KO2 tire in both sizes.

    As for the safety sense, nothing appears to be an issue based on a few tests between the shop and home today.

    I wish they made more tires in the 275 size. I think you would see a lot more 4Runners with 275 if the selection was the same as 265/285.

    I'm thinking I'll be going with the Falken wildpeak at3w for mine, they appear slightly larger than the ko2s I guess thicker tread

    I was torn between the Wildpeak, General Grabber and KO2. I’ve always been a fan of the BFGs, but they’re certainly not the only 275 to consider.

    Dobinsons 2.5" Front w/SPC UCAs and 2" Rear suspension lift. I made the mistake of buying tires (my very first purchase after I bought the truck) before lifting so I'm running 265/70 BF Goodrich K02s. Eventually would like to go with a bigger tire but am happy with size for now. I also have little desire to go buy another set of tires when I only have about 7500 miles on the current set.

    As promised, here are before and after photos of the KO2s (1st photo 275s, 2nd photo 265s). I will take more photos from various angles for a more relevant thread to this topic, but it's interesting to compare since so many people post before and after photos with the factory Duelers. The difference is less noticeable at this angle, but it really does make a difference when walking around the vehicle. Also, despite originally having the c-load 265s and now being on the 10-ply e-rated, I'd say ride quality is closer to what I expected from these tires to begin with. Too soon to measure a true fuel economy delta, but I'll have that in due time.

    Yes you suppose to have it re-calibration. ADAS (Advanced driver-assistance systems) is getting more complex a lot people have not understand yet. Even dealerships and insurance do not have up to date information. In future any wheel alignment or even a windshield replace requires all Adas recalibrated and more, As of right now only VW and Audi doing that, anyone else just ignored.
    Some of you thinking after alter and they dont have any warning does not mean it working normal. Not too long I am sure all dealers will doing it and required.

    We put on a lift, different size tires, no recalibrate, and I'm positive the system is working. When going down the road with the cruise set, coming up to slower vehicles, the warning will come on, adjust speed, and in one instance when the cruise is set coming up behind an amish buggy, the brakes were applied, my foot was covering the brake pedal but the cruise shut down and brakes came on till applied them myself, there was a audible warning also as i remember. Why not just put on the lift you want, tires etc. and if for some reason you can't find the resources to test it, (real world testing is best) ask the Toyota dealership to test it and recalibrate if need be? If it's not broke, don't fix it. I do also appreciate your views and factoids on the subject. Thanx

    Like I stated above. There will be no faults and working as you described However, they are not same spec , the reason being is the vehicle have changed and the spec that previous calibrated is not match with current condition. I have been trained and working this systems everyday. I know what it is. It is more than 10 pages to explain for you to understand. Well, even dealer and 99% insurance thinking the same . NO light NO faults, DON'T FIX. In future this will be not the case. But If i am the OP, I will have it recalibrated. Every millimeter counts , this is how I explain to the insurance when they did not want to re-calibrate.
    Given your eyes as a RADAR, when you move just 1/10 inches do you think it is out of spec? Again, what I said above right now no one seem to care , unless there are % of accidents and death for them really look into the problems.
    Anyhow, I just give my input. I can't expect you to understand as the car industry not requires yet but if any circumstances dealer will not respondsible for any happen to you.

    Is this something I can get done at other than a dealership? I totally understand the liability aspect of the situation. In a court case liability being proven by attorneys I'm sure the alterations would be a factor for sure. So where can I get the system recalibrated? Are the 10 pages available to the public? I don't doubt your expertise on the subject, I just want to know where I can get the system back on track. Thanx for the info.

    Only Audi or VW dealer they would do for you but they charge arm and legs, usually around 800-1500$. PLus they probably don't do Toyota. Since ADAS too new not many shop have not invest in the FULL system calibration machine. Tires shop starting to invest but very minimal (NOT COMPLETE PACKAGE) so you can call big shop tire like , GOODYEAR, etc/ to see if they have ADAS. but it also require to do alignment again. I am sure if you keep calling around in your states I know across the country have had invest in it like myself. What state or city you located?

    When you call Tires shop explain to them that you have changed tires and need to have alignment done and ADAS calibration usually they charge $300-400is. Good luck!!!


    Edit: you can ask for print out re-calibration just like you would TIRES ALIGNMENT, they do have before and after so you can keep for record. If shop reject your request don't do it.

    I'm in central Wisconsin.... I can check around, but I might have better luck winning the lottery! There is one VW dealership I can check with, or one Toyota dealership that is pretty "good" in the area. The search is on. Liability is a good thing to be on the right side of these days with the sue happy hoards about, and I don't want to screw up the 3,326,000+ miles of safe driving in commercial vehicles I have either.
