History: I have a 2019 4R. I have had nothing but problems with the Stereo dropping calls, disconnecting from my phone. I live in a hands free law state. I have had it at dealership multiple times and had new head unit put in. Salesman tells me it isn’t gonna fix it. It is the stereo period being behind on technology.
Question: so how would I go about getting the new Apple play radio in the 2020 4R placed into my 4R? Will it work? Not asking for the cost to be covered under warranty. I just thought that paying for this switch out would be cheaper than trading for the 2020 model. I just want rid of this junk entune radio, but want everything to still be factory. I know after marker is an option, but I was hoping to stay factory.

I believe you can use either Bluetooth or cable. I honestly don’t remember as I only watched the video once while I was contemplating a different head unit.

Question: Are you running your phone through Bluetooth or do you plug it in via USB cable?

Dropping a new 2020 4Runner head unit in your 2019 will probably cost you upwards of $4,000. Definitely not cost effective.

The above option from Beat Sonic USA is probably your most cost effective option if you want to retain things as close as stock as possible.

If you don't like the Beat Sonic USA solution, in all honesty, it's probably cheaper to trade in your 2019 for a 2020.

Beat sonic works via USB cable.

The new head unit did NOT change the problem. Using the phone on a phone call is pretty much useless with this system. It will end the call consistently on the stereo, but the call will still be on the phone. You have to reset the head unit to pick the phone back up. Service department agrees that this is an ongoing problem with this head unit and iPhones. I am NOT the only one having issues.

Someone on another thread (Radio turning off and on by itself)
had problems with the radio turning off randomly. They took it to the dealer and they flashed the firmware (replaced the basic software inside the unit) to the latest version and it solved the problem.

Please keep me informed if you find a solution. The dealership told me this week that they “are at their wits end with it and to bring the phone and car to them.” Well that means I will have to leave my phone and car with them for someone to drive around using the phone. I don’t like that idea because they first said it was my iPhone 10 now I have an 11. But mind you both of these phone work on my daughter’s Nissan Altima with NO problem.

Mine lost every call today that I attempted. I also cleared both pairings off my phone and 4R today before I started working.... So IDK it shows on the head unit that the phone isn't there. ill keep working this weekend to see if I can figure it out... Bluetooth is inherently buggy... I hate it!!!

Maybe it’s an Apple problem. I read that the new update was being aggravating. It’s a different Apple CarPlay.

I’ve had had my ORP for a year and have had no problems with the Entune or my phone (maybe because I’m “old school” and have never tried to pair them). :0)

$4000 is like 20 tickets for using your cell phone while driving. I'd take my chances.

Before changing anything, I'd try another phone !

I have a 2018 SR5 Prem (Entune w/ Nav) and have never had an issue with my either one of phones (Huawei mate SE & UMIDIGI F1), both are android. As far as i concerned the only this entune can do well is take and make calls, the nav is ok, can't use playlists on a flashdrive, and the screen is fair at best....

I second this. I was having the exact issues, but after the update I haven't had a single call drop.

I agree it doesnt do much more helpful than that... I have been truly disappointed in it... I think instead of getting XM I am saving my money for a big screen alpine halo 9

This just starting happening to me yesterday afternoon for the first time and won't stop. I was on a call and when I tried to end it, it wouldn't clear the screen. Turned 4runner off then back on and it just keeps rebooting. I have a XR and just updated to 13.3 iOS, wonder if that is the problem. Have an appointment on the 21st at the dealership.

I also recently bought a 2019 4runner Premium with Entune infotainment system. I only have 900 miles on the vehicle, and the navigation system is defective. During a recent trip; while using the navigation system, the screen went from map to home screen. I selected navigation repeatedly to return to map mode.
Toyota should issue either a TSB, or a recall to correct this obvious defective hardware/ software problem.

Started happening to me about a week or so ago (phone partial disconnection--I can stream music but my calls wont pick up). Also, when playing music from my iPhone on the Entune system, the screen keeps blinking. Its random. It always comes back to the song display but then will blink again... like it is trying to load or something. Its aggravating.

    Currently stock; MODS coming soon.
I really like the Halo 9 but the only thing I don't like is that it blocks the vents a bit. I wish they shape it differently so that it wouldn't block the vents

My Iphone 11 max will not complete a text. I can get the person the come up but it started not recording the actual text to send. Not sure if it's the bluetooth version on the phone or head unit. Sucks I have hand free texting since I bought my 17'

Just curious if you guys had any updates? I’ve been having nothing but problems with my radio as well. I made a big stink at Toyota and they said they “are investigating it.” It’s such bs. They really need to make a new head unit for the 2019 models, but you know Toyota, they won’t do anything. Also if your car is out of warranty expect to pay for updates for your head unit.

Just picked up a 2019 SR5 for the lady to drive. Hoping the radio doesn't have these issues. I had the same issues on my 2016 Tacoma and Toyota refreshed it and fixed the issue.

Entune 3.0 is one of the reasons I waited for the 2020.

Coming out of BMWs will say this. Bluetooth issues in modern cars are rarely the vehicles fault. Im not saying YOU are doing anything wrong on perphas but its usually a setting somewhere in the phone that is dropping calls, disconnecting, etc.

Not joking, most people will youtube their vehicles Bluetooth concerns. Try YouTubeing your specific phone model Bluetooth issues. There's forums for phones as well.

Thats not to say the entune in 2019 and before is great, it has its flaws, as does entune 3.0. Say what you want about BMW idrive, it far more intuitive than entune.
