    Hi Friends,

Last night my Bilstein 6112 Strut & 650lb Spring Set- 47-281202 arrived (Purchased from Online Dealer)

TLDR: Is This Normal for 'brand new' hardware?

    20200917_074354 (1).jpg 20200917_083448.jpg

Wanted a closer look- hardware bags were just thrashed and BUT WORRYING ME MORE- the seat springs looked like nothing I think BILSTEIN QC would let slide.

This is my 2nd major purchase for my truck. Please tell me Im over-exaggerating as they will get rock chips anyways???

$732 bucks and although i am brand new and this is literally the first time i have seen a strut/spring set-up, here is what worries me:
    • IS THE PICTURED NORMAL?
    • THIS IS A 650LB 'Heavy-Duty' Spring- WILL THIS CAUSE PROBLEMS w/CIR CLIP??????
    • DOES THIS DECREASE ANY SAFETY/ PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
    • IS IT NORMAL FOR YOU TO BUY NEW COILCOVERS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN USED OR PREVIOUSLY "ATTEMPTED" TO BE INSTALLED ON OTHER VEHICLES?
NOTE: I purchased my rear shocks and NEW rear springs from another online dealer- they came just fine w/packaging all intact

    I sincerely appreciate you all

It looks like tool damage where maybe they were prying or trying to compress the spring. Obviously its been used/installed. This is not brand new.

I bought this same lift but got the front 6112 and rear 5160 with the reservoirs for $950. Seems for the price you paid just for the fronts, and getting them used is much more costly. If it were me, I would return this immediately!!

    • S THE PICTURED NORMAL? - NO
    • THIS IS A 650LB 'Heavy-Duty' Spring- WILL THIS CAUSE PROBLEMS w/CIR CLIP?????? - A few small chips out of the aluminum shouldn't cause integrity failure, but you paid for new, not used
    • DOES THIS DECREASE ANY SAFETY/ PERFORMANCE STANDARDS - Its impossible to know, what if there is a fracture in the metal that you can't see. Anytime metal is pryed, there is possibility of failure
    • IS IT NORMAL - doesn't look normal. All packages should be sealed and no chips.
Would you buy a brand new car with scratches in the paint, and gunk in the crevices ?

    Tis' what i feared!

I am going the same route- 6112 up front + 5160's + new springs in the rear. Now im thinking i should have just waited for an actual Bilstein "Kit" to include them all vs. getting them sooner elsewhere.

Ill call em up and see what up.

I hope you contacted the vendor first, before you started this thread. There's no way that is acceptable.

Im so new i wanted to ask 1st. My adult side said no this is not ok, but then again this is literally the 2nd (5160's came first) shock i have ever had in hand.

I wanted to avoid calling out a vendor but they now have some messages/requests waiting for them.

I will MOST CERTAINLY update and share information when i get more in!!!

Selling those parts as new is unacceptable.

'Expediting replacement hardware packs from Bilstein'

After further looking into the rest of the parts/hardware- The coil covers definitely look like they were 'messed with'. As someone said its almost like they tried to assemble it and thought F IT-THIS IS TOO MUCH WORK.. Then thew em on the shelf & $old to me as NEW lol. The shocks themselves look alright.

At this point in time i Dont care about time. However- seeing the added "Spring" damage- should i just scrap this whole order and return?

Again- Im so new that i dont know what is 'cosmetic' damage vs potential hazzard. Im all for making these work if i get the corrected hardware AND the spring issues are not really that big?

I appreciate your input and overall outlook here.

I paid new- if i have to ask "is this normal"- chances are its probably not lol.

Yes I would return the entire package. The springs are all messed up, scratched which the powder coat no longer seals the metal, which now they'll just rust. Don't risk it, just return everything and demand new unopened. This is crazy!! Sorry you are dealing with this. Don't accept this!! Also you don't know if during this previous abuse the shock was damaged, compressed too much etc... the entire set is compromised now.

Thank you for the vote of confidence my friend :)

    • Returning/Refunding "Package"
    • $pending Refund elsewhere.
    • After spending more time on this- Merchant should have taken an in house loss with their amateur mechanic practices that thrashed these parts in the 1st place. The 'after' shot of these parts looks like something you would show in a REDALERT saying: "Remeber kids... always let a PROfessional handle the job."
    • As a 1st time customer- seems they tried to pass off a DUD to me to save some Company dough. A polished turd as some may say.

Anyways Thanks again for all your help!! Much bigger things in the world to worry about now.

You could ask the vendor to swap out for a new full set. This would give them a chance to set things right. It sounds like they have been decent so far?

    Sorry my guy.

    1) i thought this first. However main box was not that terrible. Tarmac/Loading Dock scuffs all around the dam thing, but no punctures in main box, Bilstein strut box or Coil bags. Strut boxes were CERTAINLY opened/creased more than enough to show wear.

    2) When i saw the hardware bags was when i first started to question how "new" i was willing to let my purchase be- that i have waited at the door so patiently for like my kids to the ice-cream truck. @PCRIDE4RUNNER kind of re-cemented my original view of what new should look like... or even try to MIMIC. (Unopened/Sealed/Protected)

3)Both Coils had gouges through the coat/rubber down to metal. Each had chips in paint and scratches at the bottom/top of the coils (Flat side and ALSO the face of the 1st coil.
Coil1= Gouge on middle rung "BILSTEIN LOGO" side
Coil2= Gouge on middle rung opposite "BILSTEIN LOGO" side

4)The struts themselves look very "eeeehhhhh" i guess after i have been staring at them for 6 hours. Gouges in the surface of the struts themselves. (Shiny Brushed meal then ugly dark gouges that you can see cut deeper. The top threaded area where the hardware should button up looks like some chipping/brown where the ROD ADAPTER sits. Stem itself on top of the strut Looks like some WD40 or somethin was either sprayed on & left or hell maybe its rust. Looks like it has freckles. I googled should my brand new Bilsteins have Freckles and google said : NO

I guess in a long story short: I have offspring whom i overreact for. I was literally spending all morning willing to swallow the fact that these may be used or maybe i just had a "high standard" of what i was expecting to come. When it comes down to it- if i would have kept them- i would have woken up in sweats every night thinking about how big of a deal the damage really was or what i really got.

I chose not to re-do business with the merchant, as their response was sub par and exactly what i expected them to say.

There is also what seems like a juxtaposition explanation of themselves @ their website that illuminates the hilarity of this situation.

I hate being the new kid.

The gouges in the coils would have bothered me, too. My shop assembled mine without leaving a mark (that I noticed).

At a minimum they should sell it to you at a discount and call it refurbished if it all checks out. When I bought my ELKA system I was blown away by how beautiful it was. It seemed a shame to install it on the vehicle, it looked so good on the bench. A true piece of high industrial art.
